[USS Amandora – Main Engineering]
Damien had finished setting up the Main Engineering of the USS Amandora for a training exercise with the Mercury Recruits. The new officers were Ensign to Lieutenant JG levels, and all had varying degrees of Engineering knowledge.
Allowing the new officers a change of venue, from a starbase reactor core to the full-on Engineering Dilithium Matrix Chamber Assembly with Warp Factors, would be a significant step in training them. Commodore Song had suggested that Damien perhaps try the recruits on simulations on the Amandora engineering in a previous meeting.
While he was enthusiastic regarding the training, he was overcompensating for protecting the Engines. Even though the mainframe was locked out from any theoretical challenges or dangers from a simulation, he still was weary. Having the various recruits one by one enter the main engineering, Saunders, Humphrey's, and Clinton checked each officer's credentials as they did report. Not that they didn't know the new officers by now, as they had been training with the Mercury Systems, this was another standard protocol level.
"Everything checks out, Sir." Clinton nodded as each officer had checked in on time, reporting to their stations throughout the engineering level complex of the Amandora.
"Good. Good." Damien had rubbed at the sore neck he was developing. Perhaps he was about to get another bloody nose. He always got headaches when that happened. He decided to forget that and move on to the training tasks at hand.
Damien had each officer set up at Warp Dynamics, Dilithium Control, Deuterium Flow Regulation, Core Injector Systems Controls, and EM Field Displacement Station at the rear of the core. Secondly, Damien was stationed at the main pool table in the core room. The Master Systems Display was also in full view for all the simulation participants to note and diagram, plot, and consult with their calculations.
As Damien had enough on his plate, ensuring that each officer was following their tasks to the assignment, he would simulate a standard warp core emergency shut down, warp core breach and containment scenario, and warp core ejection scenario. By now, each officer knew the proper protocols thoroughly; however, this was a different setting with different station configurations. Nearly the same as Starbase Mercury, yet it was on a Starship with Warp Factor capabilities and management of a Warp Field.
As the scenario progressed, Damien had looked at his silver wrist chronometer, checking to see when Lieutenant Tara Herculoid would be available. The Chief of Science was busy; however, she was invaluable to the exercise.
Damien would want to have the Chief of Science Officer look over each officer's stations in real-time, as he would be doing to check for any theoretical input errors into the LCAR systems. There was a series of redundancies in the programs to ensure that the Simulation had remained just that, and automated voice reactive storyline.
"Lieutenant Herculoid." Damien had graciously smiled as the bright, eyed Science Officer entered the central engineering room. "Thank you once again for agreeing to help me with this simulation." He stated.
"My pleassure," Tara replied "Where are you so far?"
"I've started the simulation countdown. We're already 22 minutes into it." He had handed Tara a padd of the Simulation's actual sequence, that the other officers were not privileged. "Here is the playout for the three simulations we will be completing. As I stated, the second pair of eyes on these guys would be much appreciated from a Science Theory pair of eyes." He was relieved that she was there.
Tara took the offered PADD and read it "It looks good, I'm looking forward to seeing how they do."
"Do you have any questions?" He looked at Tara.
"Not yet, let's see how this progresses," Tara commented
Damien nodded as he reached for a padd himself, that was directly linked to the simulation. He had begun to take notice, watching the inputs and work that the engineers were overseeing.
The dilithium core matrix was pulsing in time to the simulated speeds of warp factor 3.4. As the simulation progressed, the indicators flashed a set point within the program on Lieutenant Herculoid and Saunders padds.
Just then, one of the engineering injectors began to offset in a slow and gradual displacement. The computers had indicated this with a general warning, and audio. The engineers had taken note, doing their contingencies, only to have the central computer announce that auto overrides were not functioning. The crew would have to manually re-calculate a core injector dynamic to bring the reactor safely out of warp.
Tara called up the information on her PADd as well and watched "Let's hope they pass this test. If they don't what will you suggest?"
“If they don’t.” Damien placed his hands at his hip. “We redo the simulation with slightly modified metadata and analytics. It depends on the issue. If its…” He shuddered to think. “Bad, then I’ll have to place a recommendation to their station commanding officer to redo monthly testing for a few months.”
Lt. Saunders walked through engineering, keeping his voice low. Damien’s eyes like a hawk over each work station, as they had seemed to be handling, adapting to the situation fluidly. “These are Starfleet
trained engineers. The same courses I went through, I shudder to think.” He grimaced. Saunders was a bit grumpy after being up too late, for too long.
"They mess up remind them they do know their jobs and remember you had to learn someplace too," Tara said
Damien took the comment and nodded. “Of course, that is paramount. Thank you.” He reminded his self.
"Your welcome, we all had to learn. We didn't get where we are by knoing everything. I made mistakes and I'm sure you have," Tara said "They show promise and I can't wait to see how they handle this."
“Certainly, I wouldn’t have it any other way.” Damien agreed. He walked along, seeing as the crew were already solving the injector quotients on their own together, as a team.
“Maybe If they pass, we can have a party?” Saunders passively talked to Herculoid.
"A party is always fun," Tara said as she observed one of the engineers.
As they walked and checked over the engineering scenario, the crew had preformed admirably. The station had completed well over three scenarios, by the time Damien had thoroughly run through all his tests.
"Well... Looks like everything has worked out." He looked at Herculoid. "Thank you for your help today, I owe you one!" He smiled.
Tara shook her head, "I'm just glad I could help. They do show a lot of promise. This was a good exercise and I'm glad you asked me to help."
