Cyndi was in her classroom at Starfleet Academy, her students had just left when she heard footsteps in her classroom Looking up she was surprised to see her friend and colleague Commodore Hank Snow walk up to her desk. Setting the PADDS aside Cyndi got to her feet and walked around to where he was standing “Hank what do I owe this visit to?”
“I’m here on official business commander,” Hank said “Walk with me, I have something I need to discuss with you.”
Pulling open her desk drawer Cyndi picked up the keys to her classroom and pocketed her phaser and followed Hank out. She paused long enough to lock the door and then fell in step with him, “What’s wrong?”
“Nothing is wrong commander, but I have a question for you and one that needs a fair answer,” Hank said glancing over at her as they walked.
“Of course commodore,” Cyndi said
“You keep turning down commands; you’re more than qualified to have your own command. You’re being wasted in that classroom. Why Cyndi do you keep turning them down?” Hank asked as they stopped in the lounge where a good look at the Golden Gate Bridge off in the distance, they took seats.
Cyndi looked out at the shuttles as they landed and took off and at the personal both Starfleet and students for several minutes before turning her attention back to Hank “Because I’m a scientist and I love working in the lab and I believe it or not love teaching. I was content to be a first officer as I still had the chance to work in the science labs. This way I get the best of both worlds.”
Hank pulled out a small brown box from his pocket and handed it to Cyndi along with a PADD “Commander Cyndi Song this is to inform you that your hereby promoted to the rank of captain with all the rites and privileges that go with it. The PADD is your command. There is a brand new Galaxy Class Starship being readied for launch in the Saturn Ship yards. Your to report aboard in two days as her captain.”
“Hank, Commodore I don’t want this,” Cyndi protested
“Cyndi you’ll have lab times and I need you out there. I don’t want to make this an order, just accept it and give this a chance. In six months if you still are against it you can return to teaching. But I need a captain for that new ship and I can’t think of a better person to command her,” Hank said taking the gold pip and getting to his feet walked to Cyndi who also stood and Hank placed the gold pip on her collar. He offered his hand to her “Well captain what say you?”
Cyndi was silent for several minutes and finally shook Hank’s hand “I’m willing to try Hank and thank you.”
“You’ve earned it Cyndi,” Hank said “I have a replacement teacher for you, he’ll be taking over tomorrow, I want you to spend the next day or so getting used to your ship’s specs.”
Cyndi checked the time “I better get back to my class, I have students arriving in a few minutes. I’ll keep you posted on things,” with that she headed back to her classroom smiling over the promotion.
