Tara was setting the bridge shift rotation and ran across a name she'd never seen before. The commodore or the first officer was usually good about letting her know when a new officer for science had arrived. But not this time, tapping her com-badge "Lieutenant Kees, this is Lieutenant Herculoid, the science chief, can you meet me in my office."
Ellie hadn’t yet had chance to meet her superior in the Science department, she had planned to do it as soon as possible but it seemed like Lieutenant Herculoid had beaten her to it. “On my way Lieutenant.” Heading to the Science Chief’s Office she pressed the chime and waited.
Turning from her micro-scope "Come in," Tara called as she turned back to her micro-scope long enough to jot down what she'd found and pulled the slide out to clean it.
“Lieutenant Ellie Kees reporting as requested.” Ellie smiled warmly. “My apologies for not having introduced myself sooner.”
"Tara Herculoid, please have a seat," covering her micro-scope Tara took a seat at her desk and moved several PADDS out of the way. "Normally Commodore Song or Commander Raymond let me know when I have a new officer. When did you arrive" Tara asked sliding a plate of cookies toward her "These are a family recipe, that is when my mum decides she's going to cook."
“Thank you” Ellie took a seat and picked up a cookie. “I arrived a few days ago but I got so engrossed in my duties I forgot all about letting you know I was here.” She politely ate the cookie savoring every bite.
"The only way I found you were aboard is I was working on the bridge shift rotation and ran across your name. How are you finding things? This is a big ship," Tara commented.
“I’ve been on big ships before” Ellie grinned. “I make a point of keeping a map with me in case I get lost! Actually I’m enjoying it here.”
"You really can't get lost, all you have to do is tell the computer where you want to go and it will guide you," Tara said "I've read your file, but tell me about yourself. Anything not listed that I should be aware of?"
Ellie shook her head. “Not really, with one exception. I’m afraid of heights. I have no idea why, I just am.”
"Your secret's safe with me as I too am not a fan or heights, I make it work but I'm not fond of them," Tara said
Ellie breathed a sigh of relief, “Well I’m sure if we ever need to face it we can do it together.”
"That we will," Tara said smiling "But your about to hate me, your shift rotation will be the graveyard shift."
“I had a feeling it would be” Ellie shrugged her shoulders. “It’s not a problem, I don’t mind a quieter shift. As long as I don’t get passed over for all away teams.” She grinned.
"Third shift is not always that quiet," Tara commented "One of my cadet cruises was third shift and it was anything but quiet and as far as away teams you'll be on some as there will be times when I won't be able to go or my assistant."
Ellie nodded. “Well I’m looking forward to getting stuck into whatever the graveyard shift has to throw at me.” She grinned.
"Do you have any questions for me?" Tara asked.
“Apart from your expectations of me? None that I can think of” Ellie smiled warmly. “I know my job and I’ll do my best not to let you down.”
"I'm not hard to get along with, you'll find that as we get to working with each other. All I expect is do your job and don't go over my head to Commodore Song, Commander Raymond or the second officer Major Hurd," Tara replied
“I wouldn’t dream of it” Ellie smiled. “You are my superior Officer and as such I would report to you.”
"Thank you as there was one who kept going over my head on another ship," Tara said "I think we're done here, welcome aboard and I look forward to working with you."
“Likewise ma’am” Ellie smiled warmly and stood to head on her way.
Tara stood as well "I need to get to the bridge, my door is always open if you need anything. That goes for my quarters as well," Tara said.
“I’ll remember that” Ellie smiled walking alongside Tara as they exited her office and went their separate ways.
