Mission:
Character Development
Location: Engineering Office
Timeline: Current
[ON:]
Saunders was the first to arrive. His day crew consisted of Tal and Eva. Both he had worked with limited amounts of time since he had come on the Amandora. Periodically, each morning there was a debriefing of the night shifts prior notes.
Sometimes there were no issues to discuss, and it would turn into a conversation, albeit that early in the morning, each officer would relax and drink their chosen morning beverage.
“Computer, bring up level 3 diagnostics of the port nacelle relays once again.” The computer did so and was displayed for the office personnel.
Damien had replicated a varying degree of generalized Starfleet morning breakfast items on the table. Each of the two would be welcomed to a hot drink and breakfast.
Just then, Saunders had heard what seemed like two officers entering.
“I’m in here!” Saunders had called from the office to the side of the pool table.
Having entered main engineering, and none-too-happy, Alona had turned the corner just as she heard "I'm in here." Good, she thought, time to clear the air. She entered and came to a stop while others were gathering food. "Mister Saunders, engineering is my secondary position. I will not delay another morning Security meeting to satisfy your engine room. MY job is Security Chief, and that takes precedence. Please, in the future, keep that in mind and schedule these meetings at more convenient times. If not, then send me a full report on what was discussed and, I assure you, I will read them."
"Alona, please sit down." He offered a gesture to a seat. "Welcome to the Engineering Department. As The Matter / Energy Systems Specialist, you are a specialized Engineer."
He was reeling that he had to tell this Centurion what her own job was on the USS Amandora. "All aspect of matter energy transfers with the sole exception of the warp drive systems are handled by the Matter/Energy Systems Specialist. Such areas involved are transporter and replicator systems. The Matter/Energy Systems Specialist is the Officer in charge of a small team, which is made up from NCO personnel, assigned by the Assistant and Chief Engineer."
As he poured his self a mug of coffee and handed it to the Centurion, and one for his self. "The Matter/Energy Systems Specialist reports to the Assistant and Chief Engineer." He pointed to his self.
"I am the assistant Engineer, as per Starfleet you report to me." He furrowed an eyebrow. "Were you hit on the head lately?" He questioned. "As I check the departmental listing for Security, you are not even listed in the Department. Why would you be, you are a warp propulsion specialist." He shook his head coming around the table and sitting on the side. "If you want to transfer departments that is your issue, not mine. I write a report to no other existing Department Head for you. Get over yourself!"
Saunders was kind, but his nice demeanor had its limits when someone called him out, on something so woefully uninformed. "Centurion. I am glad you are here, we will go through the MY Engineering issues since this is where you are stationed." He gruffed.
"Bye," she headed for the door. "When you learn that we are equals as department heads then, and only then, will I return." As Alona stopped and half turned to look at him she added. "On a Romulan vessel Intelligence and Security are one and the same so, you are right, that was a mistake in wording." She closed her eyes a moment, intaking a deep breath before letting it out quietly, seeing that Saunders was still fuming, with every right. "Accept my apology, Lieutenant. I am still adjusting to your Starfleet ways. Reading about it and experiencing it are two different things." She came back to stand before him. "Treat me as an equal, not an underling. I will do as you direct when it comes to engineering. Just know that if Intel needs me I will leave. Period." In a very un-Romulanlike gesture she held out her right hand to be shook. "Agreed?"
"This has nothing to do with being treated an equal or not. This is a Department, I expect you to follow Departmental Meetings on time. If you feel you have other commitments, or transfers contact the Chief of Ops. Now as I said, please sit down. We need your help," Saunders rested back in to his seat. Taking a drink from his coffee, his mind brushed off whatever the Centurion's fit was.
"Ok. So today.." He tapped on his PADD and handed out two pads to both Tal and Eva. "The Captain wants warp systems on target, so that means we have to complete a level 3 diagnostic. A visual on all systems, as Capt. Song will be asking for our departmental readiness."
He looked at Tal. "The work you did on the warp core field guards was simply stunning work, in record time." He looked at Eva. "Eva, I would like you to work with the Lieutenant. I will be checking our matter anti matter storage systems, and then Tal if you could look at them after, I would appreciate it." He gave his standard calm, collected nod and smile.
"Guys, if we have issues we bring them out here. I understand now Tal that you are Intel, and this is vital to the ship. I want to work with your scheduling obviously." He was professional about it.
"Bloody hell!" Alona's anger finally boiled over. First, to be talked down to by a man equal in position to herself, and then with him always getting her name wrong. "I am Alona Tal. Since you seem to know nothing of Rihannsu culture I shall educate you. Tal is my Family name. Alona is my given name. So, please, from now on refer to me as Alona, NOT TAL! Is that simple enough for you or do you need a compass and a map?"
He coughed, excusing his self. "Alona." He offered a surprising look at her anger. Where was this coming from?
"I understand you are Chief Intel Officer on the books, yet you are stating your Chief of Security." He paused and shook his head. "There has been a miscommunication on both our part. That is equal."
He was doing his best to smooth things over. " Next time, please tell me you are head of Security, not an Intel Officer with Secondary Matter/Anti Matter Specialization. As you know, this is a critical component of a Starship. I was only looking out for the safe operations of this Star Ship."
He shook his head. "You can go back to Security, and Ensign Humphrey's and I will discuss what we need to do. I will send your report to you. I am sorry for bothering you." He furrowed. "Oh, and by the way. As Chief of Security, for the future, you may want to learn to keep your.... cool."
Was this man's skull cut from granite? Alona took in another long breath and let it out. "We have already established that I am not the Security chief, I am Intel chief. That was my mistake while rambling. And, thank you for finally recognizing that we are who we are." She had seen his eyes give a moment of understanding over what she meant, not her refusal to aid him. "Is that the sound of the abacus clacking?" She gave a friendly grin with a bit of snark to it. "I never once said I would not do as you ASKED, Mister Saunders. While serving as an engineer in any capacity I will defer to you, first. Acceptable?" She extended her right hand for a shake, something Vulcanoids tended to shy away from. They didn't like to be touched by outsiders.
Damien felt this was the best recourse, given the mix up they both had. "Of course, Chief of Intel." He nodded. While he didn't understand where the current aggression was coming from, he had felt it best to make a cordual alliance with Lieutenant Alona.
Extending his hand he gave a firm, solid grasp around her hand. A simple shake. "We have an agreement."
