Ensign Ocha closed his eyes when he was engulfed in the shimmering blue light that would transport him to the surface of the Colony planet. He knew it wouldn’t make any difference but somehow he felt better if he had to voluntarily open his eyes when he arrived. He didn’t like being transported, but he accepted it as part of the job.

Once he felt the sun on his skin, however, he did feel better. His eyes fluttered open and he was rewarded with the sights of sky and land, and his heart felt lighter for it. Rather than open his Tricorder, he extended his senses and felt the spirit of Eliah even in this strange land. He marveled at the one-ness of nature, even in places separated by vast stretches of nothingness.

To his surprise, he felt the presence of animals, and turned to see that the Colonists had several stock animals penned up. Walking up the hill, he approached the enclosure and greeted them, a gentle brush of his mind against theirs. As one, they turned to regard him, a bewitching sight to anyone watching. He nodded to them, an acknowledgement of the role they had to play in the success of the Colony, and they nodded, in their own ways, back.

Whistling a happy tune, he turned back to the task at hand, and moved on to begin gathering soil and biological samples.
