The bridge was sort of empty as the key bridge officers rearranged their time to avail for leave. Sabbath often took leave when it was convenient but this time he had not opted to.

Working from his science station a clicking sounded reminded him of a while ago, in a Star Fleet class room at the Academy.

< Several Years Ago >

Sabbath entered Warp statistics and took a center seat to listen to the professor.

" Professor Sanderson the floor is yours." the class teacher introduced.


Sanderson prepared to speak to a class concerning warp drive.

"Thank you for the introduction," Paul said as he turned his attention to the class, "As you know warp drive is light speed, A warp drive is a device that distorts the shape of the space-time continuum. A spacecraft equipped with a warp drive may travel at speeds greater than that of light by many orders of magnitude."


Hands raised as questions filled the classes minds. One in particular was a young Vulcan cadet. " Sir, your text book answer is sufficient but is there an in class demonstration you can show us?"

"I can have you in a simulator or I can find a star ship captain who would be willing to take on a cadet for a short cruise," Paul said.

" Not necessary sir. " Sabbath replied. Following this 3 other students asked questions.

After the class Sabbath hung back and availed the speaker for more direction. " Professor Sanderson might I have a moment of your time?"

"What can I do for you lieutenant?" Paul asked.

" I am perplexed with my calling. Logic would suggest being Vulcan to accept my role as a scientist. I also have a desire to be a functional engineer. How did you come to your career choice?" Sabbath asked.

"My career chose me, I didn't start out to be an engineer but an operations officer. My CO at the time said I knew the ship's too well to be operations and had the chief engineer take me under his wing and that's how I ended up in engineering," Paul replied.

" Interesting. To allow one's career to pick the person is certainly not the Vulcan way. I will have to devote more study to this. Thank you Professor." Sabbath replied.

< Back to the Reality>

Completing his duty on the bridge Sabbath then retired for the day as he returned to his quarters. Consuming dinner Sabbath read his duty reports and then settled down.Before him laid a kit to build a model of a star ship. The first one he ever built being a constitution class. He was not pleased with the nacelles design as the pylons seemed to be over loaded by the nacelles but the beauty of the ship made even a Vulcan smile.

" Now what should I call you? Of course you are the USS Sanderson," Sabbath said to himself finding that he was talking to the model. The Sanderson was not an original constitution class ship but that did not bother Sabbath. He had allowed the model to name itself as the Professor had told him.
