Away Mission to the Moon

Mission:
Are You Worthy?-2
Location: Amandora and Planets Moon
Timeline: Concurrent With Away Team on Planet

Jennifer reacted to the location of the Mission, “Dad we are going to this planets moon?”
Smithers smiled, “Why not Lt Sabbath says there are some ruins from a possible ancient Civilization down there. That makes sense why we need a shuttle to go there.
Jennifer added, “We only did scans of the planet wouldn’t we need to do some on this moon too?
Smithers indicated to Lt Sabbath that he wanted to do more scans of the moon to add to his before going down there. After asking Lt Sabbath where a good place to go was Smithers waited for the Moon to be in range again and Zoomed into the area in question.
Sabbath still had to convince the Commodore it was a good idea.
He reported his findings to Lt Sabbath, “Sir I found the ruins of something on the Moon. The atmosphere believe it or not has a thin breathable atmosphere similar to high elevations on Earth. The temperature ranges from -20C to about +40C. We will need suitable outfits to go to the surface. Jennifer and I have endured that temperature range before on Earth.”
Lt Sabbath if this plan sounds good to you please present the plan to Commodore Song and ask for the use of a shuttle to get to the moon. It will be easier to have all of the digging gear handy on the shuttle already. No extra beaming. Since you are the Science Chief it makes sense for you to present the Away Mission.
Sabbath approached the Commodore
" Commodore a moment of your time please?"
"What's on your mind lieutenant?" Cyndi asked as she walked over to the science station on the bridge.
" Scans of the Planetary moon are showing signs of a civilization once residing there. While there is no sign of sentient life there could be clues. I request permission to take a 3 person team down to the moon to investigate?" Sabbath requested.
Curiosity sparked Cyndi studied the scans for a few minutes "Who are you requesting to take on this away team? Me? she said teasingly knowing her place was on the ship.
" Initially I was content to remain aboard the ship and allow Lt Herculoid all of the action. However it is a good opportunity to study the moons relics without the clumsiness of the other departments. I plan to take Lt Smithers and Crewman Jennifer Smithers." Sabbath replied.
"She's a good scientist, I'm a little envious as well, An uncharted planet and moon is every scientist's dream. I'll expect regular check in's. Please for me bring back some samples for me to study. Just be careful, What do the three of you have planned? I'll monitor science on the ship," Cyndi replied.
" I concluded as such. We will touch down, run a few scans and collect samples to study back here. By the book." Sabbath answered.
Cyndi said "Remember I do have the final say as to who is going."
Jennifer looked at the Commodore, “Commodore both Smithers and I look forward to doing something for this mission. When Lt Sabbath asked both of us to go on an away mission to this planet’s moon, I got excited.”
Smithers Continued, “Lt Sabbath thought it would be a good idea to take a shuttle over to the moon to these coordinates.” Smithers still sitting in the Science Station chair indicated the location that was still on the screen. “There seems to be some ancient relics in that area. Since I’m a certified shuttle pilot I can fly the three of us over there. Using my Runabout would not be a good idea right now due to the soil and plants still being in its cargo hold. Grainger, Jennifer, and I have gone to places around the Earth, Mars, and the Alpha Centauri system in the past doing similar missions on our own and sponsored. So, we would need your permission to go on the away mission and the use of one of Amandora’s shuttle’s.”
Jennifer spoke up and looked at both Lt Sabbath and the Commodore, “Commodore I assure you that we will bring back plenty of samples and scans while we are on the Moon. Smithers and I have equipment in our Runabout that can be used on the mission. So, we can move the equipment over to the shuttle before going. Also, from our initial scans we found out that the moon has a thin breathable atmosphere like high elevations on Earth. The temperature ranges from -20C to about +40C. We will need suitable outfits to go to the surface.”
Sabbath said no more as he awaited the Commodores response.
"I have two questions for Smithers and Jennifer, when you joined the crew you stated that you needed to get your samples and soil to the Arboretum as you'd been in space with them a long time. You were concerned about them being too long on the run about. Now you wish to unload them to the cargo bay, go with Lieutenant Sabbath and take a shuttle to the planets moon, Will your samples and soil be okay? Secondly you mentioned equipment you want to take with you on the mission to the moon. How much equipment and what are you planning on doing with it?" Cyndi asked "As for piloting the shuttle, Lieutenant Sabbath is science chief it's up to him who will pilot the shuttle."
" I am not concerned Commodore. My shuttle skills are currently that of a trainer so I will be responsible either way. Our goal is to gather as much data as we can and return to the ship for analysis. " Sabbath replied. Remembering back to a time he had asked to go on a hunt with the Awa hunting party. Only to be denied by his mother.
When Lt Sabbath was responding Smithers had Jennifer switch places with him and stood up to face the commodore. “Commodore no disrespect intended. Since Lt Sabbath is in charge of the mission, he can certainly pilot the shuttle. Earlier I was offering my services for piloting a shuttle and that’s all. As for your questions, we didn’t come all this way just to abandon our samples. Jennifer would have a major fit if I intended to do that. During the away mission they will stay in my runabout where it’s safe. This is why we requested the use of one of Amandora’s shuttles for the mission. Our plan was to temporarily use Amandora’s cargo bay to put the samples while we finish up the plans of where to put them in the arboretum. Lt Sabbath offered to help move the samples to the cargo bay after the mission. We were planning on going over everything about the plans for the samples with you before starting to move things. They will be fine for a few more days if needed.”
Jennifer nodded and then Smithers continued, “Commodore, our plan is to take scans of the area indicated on the science stations screen and then take a few soil samples and perhaps other samples we find under the direction of Lt Sabbath. A long time ago Grainger and I came up with a specialized equipment kit just for looking for and possibly digging for samples. All the equipment fits in a backpack. Grainger is using one right now on the away team on the planet’s surface. The pack consists of water, a little food, a small collapsible shovel, a hammer and chisels. Several wipes, a brush, smaller instruments to gently scrape away at an object, rope and other items needed for climbing up or down cliffs, binoculars, flashlight, small med kit, and several containers for samples.”
With a Smile Smithers finished, “We also made specialized suits that can handle different temperature ranges, and they are built to last. Both the suits and backpacks are not Starfleet issue, but they have helped us on many expeditions for years. If for some reason, we need more or less equipment that is up to Lt Sabbath. We don’t want to be on the moon's surface for too long. Commodore do you have any more questions?”
Sabbath also looked to the Commodore for input or rebuttal.
"I'll permit your special backpacks and suits this time. I do caution you regarding backpacks. Not every away mission will have a need for backpacks. Depending on the climate they can and will get heavy. Most of us scientists carry a field kit, I have mine although I don't get a chance to use it a lot. Mine like most scientists mine has vials for water, soil samples, plant samples and rocks. It's about the size of a large shoulder bag. It even contains a small chisel and tweezers for collecting things," Cyndi said turning to Sabbath "Lieutenant standard EV suit, I'll keep a transporter lock on you three at all times and I'll monitor science from the ship. Be careful not to disturb things down there too much as we know nothing about this planet or moon. Keep in contact with me at all times. Standard tri-coders. Scans show no life on the moon."
" By the book Commodore. " Sabbath replied. " Team go prepare for this mission. I will meet you in the shuttle bay in 2 hours." he added.
