Lieutenant William Wright III was relaxing in his quarters after a weird first Away Mission. Being the Operation's Chief he still was at a loss for his presence on a Science Mission; he sort of felt very out of place the entire time.

Finishing his Whiskey neat, he put his feet up ready for some much needed down time. Shortly his comm went off so he made his way to his desk wondering who it could be. "Lieutenant Wright here, go ahead" he stated.

"Lieutenant you have an incoming transmission Sir" the Comms Officer informed him.

"Patch it through to my quarters" William replied sitting down at his desk as the terminal came to life. The face he saw was welcomed but surprising all at the same time "Mother what do I owe the pleasure."

"Hello my boy" then she paused trying to hold it together "It's your Father.....I'm afraid I have some terrible news......he was involved in a Shuttle Transport accident" as the tears began to well up in her eyes "He was one of twenty who lost their life.....he's......not with us anymore" then the flood gates opened as she sobbed uncontrollably.

At this point a million things were going through his mind all at once as he could feel his heart breaking. Clearing his throat "Mother that's horrible......I'll talk to my Captain and get home as soon as possible" then he paused collecting himself before going on "Have you made any arrangements yet?" he inquired.

Wiping the tears she took a deep breathe "No not yet I wanted you to know first" then she paused again "When do you think you might be able to get home.....I could really use a shoulder to cry on and help making the arrangements."

Thinking for a moment "Not entirely sure but soon Mother soon come hell or high water" William answered with conviction.

"Thank you William that means more than you know. I'll let you go and hope to see you soon. I love you" she replied feeling somewhat better now.

"I love you too Mother; see you soon" he answered then the conversation was terminated.

William felt like someone had just punched in in the gut as the reality began to set in. Making himself another drink he went and sat on the couch; sipping his drink as the tears started running down his face.

Thinking on what his next move would be, his time in Star Fleet began to cascade through his mind. Even though he'd only been in service for about eleven years he really had never felt liked he belonged there; especially aboard the Amandora. He felt out of place most of the time and had made only a few friends. He knew his duty execution was acceptable but maybe.....just maybe it was time to move on.

Pondering things for the next hour it was clear what he now needed to do.....put Family first for once and resign his Commission from Star Fleet and maybe start having a real life for once as he thought "Ironic how tragedy has a way of putting your life into perspective for you."
