Posted on Tue May 25th, 2021 @ 10:57am by Lieutenant Tara Herculoid PhD & Lieutenant James McTavish

Mission: Planet Savai
Location: James Office
Timeline: Current

ON:

Tara collected her files, samples and the crystal shards and headed for her boss's office. Once there she tapped on his office door and waited/

James was sitting at his desk going over some reports when he heard the knock on his door "Come in" came the answered.

Tara walked into James office "I hope I'm not disturbing you, but I figured you needed to see what I brought back from the planet."

Being the gentleman that James was, he stood out of respect for the gentler sex "No, your not disturbing me at all....matter of fact I could use a break from all these reports. Here, you can put all the samples on the conference table and please have a seat. So how are you feeling" James asked as he took a seat."

Tara placed her samples on the conference table and took a seat, "I'm fine, a little tender but otherwise I'm fine. Kristian is a worrywart just like my mum." Tara said as she handed him the red crystal shard "It's my believe the red ones are alive, not a life form but they are alive."

James looked the red shard over, then commented " I couldn't imagine having one these stuck inside me; anyway what makes you think their alive."

"It moves, and I saw it break free and fly down from the floating Island, it seemed to be looking for something and it found something, me," Tara said laughing "If you set it on the table and place your hand in front of it, it will back away. Once they die they turn clear. These shards are dilithum crystals."

James tried what Tara had just mentioned and sure enough it backed away, then looking at Tara " Well, that certainly is different. So what are their function on the Planet; besides becoming stuck in someone" James said with a chuckle.,

"From what I understand they're the ones that hold up the floating platforms that some of the people of Savai live on. In theory I believe as they begin to die they disengage and fall to the ground to either die or secure food for the people of the planet. Once dead they just lay there or are used in other functions. It's too bad I wasn't there from the beginning," Tara commented "I'd have loved to get more readings."

"That's certainly an interesting function that the crystals serve. Although I would hate to think what would happen if too many died out too quickly; that could be devastating for the Planet" James concluded.

Tara nodded "I agree unless as one dies and drops off others take their place. Either way it's interesting, that planet from what I saw is full of mysteries and wonders. It's a scientist's dream."

"Sounds to me like a good place for you to spend shore leave" James said with a chuckle "Who knows how many more mysteries and wonders are out there just waiting for us to discover."

"You'd never get me to leave," Tara commented "My home planet has a forbidden city that I love to explore despite strict orders from my father to stay away from it. Perhaps one day we'll return to this planet and I can explore it further. We've only scratched the surface of things there and if the Federation grants them admittance it will be a win for everyone."

"Let's hope they get admitted then; I'm quite sure it would be very beneficial for all concerned" James replied.

I can't agree more," Tara said "The soil is rich enough to grow crops in and with come good irrigation it will sustain them, there's plenty of game to hunt and eat and well you get the idea."

"Sounds like a nice place. Did you discover anything else before...you know....your mishap" he asked.

"There's an old city made up of different cultures, Romulan, Klingon, Orion to name some. We found what appeared to be a mine large enough that I Doctor Long or I could have flown Lieutenant Rivers fighters into it," Tara said

"That's a lot of different cultures for one area; although they probably came at different times throughout history. I wonder what they were mining; it must have pretty important to attract that many different races" James concluded.

"There's no way to know," Tara replied "All in all it was an interesting place."

Thinking for a moment "It's really nice when work becomes almost enjoyable" James said with a slight chuckle.

"That's why I went into science, it's fun and challenging all at the same time," Tara replied

"Yes, it is" James responded "Although now I find myself more of an administrator than a scientist; goes with the territory. That's the one thing that impressed me about our department, from what I've observed most everyone seems to have a real passion for their respective fields; makes for a solid department and makes my job easier."

"James there is no reason you can't do as much science stuff as you want. You have twenty science officers in three labs. Delegate things, Commodore Song has space in here and when she does have time from command you'll find her in here. She's a hell of a scientist," Tara said. "She's taught at Starfleet Academy,"

"Now that I've settled in here, and most fo my meetings are over with, I should be able to carve out some time for some research into the collapsed wormhole that's off the starboard side of the Ship. The Stellar Cartography Lab's computer has been recording data since I discovered it on a probe launch and there is tons of data to go through. But a lot of my time is spent reading a mountain of reports and I like to visit the different Labs once a week just to stay in the loop. The Commodore taught at the Academy....most impressive" James replied.

"That sounds interesting to say the least. I've always wanted to pilot a shuttle or a fighter into one. But I don't as we don't know enough about them " Tara said "yes she has taught and from what I understand she keeps her teaching license up to date. She taught there between assignments."

"There are a few very stable wormholes around Federation Space that are used quite successfully for navigational purposes. Unless a wormhole has been studied for a long period of time, using one could be a disaster. Once they fold in on themselves it's been my experience that they seldom reopen and you could end up who knows where and never be able to get home again" James explained "Maybe the next time I go to the Commodore's ready room I should bring a nice shiny red apple with me."

Tara couldn't help but laugh "I think she'd get a big kick out of it. As for the wormhole while I'd love to fly into it, I don't dare risk it. Not until more is known about it."

"Ya, that's probably a wise decision" James said with a chuckle "Like I said you could end up who knows where."

I've taken up enough of your time," Tara said getting to her feet. I've still got some data to go over and I want to meet my cousin and Alesha later for dinner."

"Actually you saved me from a pile of reports so thank you; drop by anytime my door is always open" James replied "Enjoy your dinner."

"As it mine," Tara said "Feel free to stop in as well," with that she headed out of his office
