Jay was in a roll hitting all the departments before the mission got good. Next on his quest was Major Hurd and his fine marines.
There were protocols of course, being a fleeter, he had to respect the Major and still maintain his position as XO.
" First Officer Bird to see Major Hurd Corporal." Bird greeted the guy at the table.
The Corporal pointed out the door and said, "He's in Marine Armoury one, moving ordnance around, I wouldn't startle how m if I were you", Corporal Allen replied with a smile on his face as he went back to his duties. Looking back up, he added, "Reason I say that is he's armed and doesn't like surprises".
" Yea well I'll just wait til he's done movin ordnances
Corporal." Bird replied as he looked about the room.
Being unfamiliar with the Major he didn't dare tread on sacred marine property.
"Go ahead and go on back", the Corporal said. "Just make sure you announce yourself before you enter is all".
Bird looked the Corporal in the eye and slowly walked back there.
" MAJOR HURD? DO NOT SHOOT ME" Bird yelled out. " I am Lieutenant Commander James Bird. the ships new XO "
Dropping a crate of incindary grenades on his foot out of surprise, Hurd bellowed, "Enter!". Hearing the XO approaching, Hurd stood bolt upright despite the pain in his foot, adjusted his Pistol Belt, and waited. "This should be fun", he thought with a wry smile.
Jay could feel his grand maws flute playing as he entered the layer, his Cherokee blood ran cold as the hairs on his neck prickled.
" Major Hurd, James Bird ships new XO. I am making the rounds to say Hi. I also want to see where I can help with your mission? I am not a desk officer my back ground is Infiltration." Jay greeted.
"I see", Hurd said tilting his head slightly. "Well, tell me about yourself."
" Who is Jay Bird? I am a pilot, a bandit, and a warrior. But I suck at being a baby sitter to a washed up Admiral who is...whipped."
"I'll thank you", Hurd said his face growing red, " not to speak of them like that."
Jay paused his discontent and backed up.
" I didn't mean to hurt your feelings. It sucks being the new guy and not fitting in."
"Don't worry about it", Hurd said moving another c ate. "So what can I do for you?"
" I want in on the mission. Infiltration, Infintry what ever you need i can help . This is a marine deployment you will have the lead. The Commodore says she wants to go but there are regulations by the book XO's follow preventing that. I am expendable she is not." Jay replied .
"You are far from expendable". I am the Marine CO, 2nd Officer aboard ship, and I still lead and fight from the front". Moving a few more crates, he stopped and turn to face the XO again. "As of this moment you are a Honorary Marine with all rights and privileges therein, draw your gear and get ready for fighting".
For the first time in many years Jay was humbled as he heard the Majors words. Remembering back to his deployment aboard the cube a similar sentiment had come from another icon of his, his former CO.
* Jay around that corner is probably our deaths. What we do there is our destinies. I'll see you on the other side.
" Thank you Major Hurd." Jay replied extending his right hand to shake Hurds.
Shaking the Man's hand, Hurd said, so tell me about your training, experience, and your believes on the Battle Field itself".
" I was recruited as a boy. When Enterprise D was destroyed word reached out nation. My parents helped rescue worlds from Cardassian rule so I heard many stories. I trained after the academy at a section 31 compound. I am no longer in that organization Major. I also had Recon and sniper schools with marines and even a Klingon defense course. The bat'leth is a ceremonial weapon but the dak'tagh is a weapon I respect. I am a trained helmsman and fighter pilot and have a working knowledge of engineering. I ...sound like a bragging quarter back. A Battle field is a sacred site. It is here we stand to meet our ancestors or send our enemies to theirs," Jay replied.
"I have fought the Borg, Romulans, Klingons, Jem'Hadar, and many, many more.", "And you know what?". "I'm not afraid of any of them".
" You said you are Second Officer? Does the Commodore allow you to hold a watch on the bridge?" Jay asked.
"She hasn't said directly, but I would assume that with the 2nd Officer post, I'd be allowed to hold a Bridge watch.' Hurd smiled and said, "I'm a collector and jack of all trades."
" We have that in common sir. As XO I will put you on the watch list . I prefer three watches Alpha, Beta and Gamma. You and I can alternate Gamma if you wish. Alpha is always busy." Jay added.
"Alpha or Gamma is fine with me", Hurd said as he loves added the final box of munitions on the grav sled. Turning back tpo the XO he said, "Sir, their are a few things I should inform you about". "Our motto is"Retreat Hell". No matter the situation we don't fall back, we don't retreat, we don't give ground". We constantly advance, and if necessary will die to hold the ground we have taken and to ensure the success of the mission, even at the cost of our lives if need be".
Jay heard his and imagined the Major's mindset as opposite as what his training had been. Mind you he was not a Marine but he also had his own belief system. If the battle was worth fighting it was worth fighting to the death for. But sometimes politicians started fights and expected soldiers to die for them .
" If you take me along I won't leave until you do." Bird told him. He then turned and exited the Marine billots.
