James stood and watched Tara as she headed towards the North end of the village. After she was out of sight James headed to the South end of the village as they had agreed upon while thinking "I sure hope Tara knows what she's in for getting taken prisoner."
As he entered the village James put his head down and tried not to make eye contact with anyone. Up ahead he noticed an old man sitting under a tree trying to evade the heat and the scorching sun.
James walked over to where the man was sitting 'Excuse me Friend...mind if I sit down" he asked with a smile.
The old man looked up at him "Suit yourself Son.....I have no claim to this tree" he replied with a crackly, hoarse voice.
James sat and after a few moments he asked "So how are you doing today."
The old man looked over at James with a puzzled look on his face then replied "Look around, how the hell do you think I'm doing." James wasn't quite sure what to say in reply, then the old man continued "I've seen eighty five summers in this 'hell-hole' and will probably see a few more until the Maker sees fit to take me out of this pit once and for all."
"So....you want to die I take it" James replied.
The old man just chuckled "Your damn right I do....the afterlife has got to be better than this place....and most certainly a lot less painful."
James had a concerned look on his face then asked "Do you have a mate...a wife" he asked.
The old man just looked down to the ground "Well I did have until about a year ago....one of those bastards wanted a drink of water and when my wife walked over to him with it" then he paused "She tripped on a root, fell and spilled the water. The Jem Hadar walked over and literally beat her to death for spilling the water. What kind of monster does that to anyone let alone an old women."
"Friend I'm so very sorry for your loss" James replied being very sincere "Is there anything I can do to help you."
The old man sort of smiled "You could get me the hell out of here...I would like to die any place but here.....of course you'd have to be some kind of miracle worker to pull something like that off" the old man concluded.
James looked straight into the old man's eyes "You know miracles do happen every so often" he said with a smile trying to console of old fellow.
The old man just looked at James for a moment "You're not from this camp are you" he asked.
With that question it was James' time to leave "It was nice talking to you Friend but it's time for me to be going" as James stood then looked at the man "Don't give up on that miracle...you never know what might happen."
James walked away to talk with other villagers while thinking "Maybe we can pull off a few miracles before we leave orbit."
