After a rather informative chat with the old gentleman, James hoped that he had given the man some glimmer of hope in this forsaken place.
It was getting towards noonday and the heat was much more intense now. James saw a young women over by a well and decided to walk over; hopefully to strike up a conversation with her.
As he walked over to her "Afternoon....you don't suppose I could get a cup of water do you....I'm rather thirsty from the heat" he said then offered a warm smile.
The young women looked up at James and smiled back "Yes...of course" as she grabbed a cup and filled it then handed it to him.
"The heat tends to get very intense for the next few hours so a cool drink of water and some shade are worth a King's ransom; please have a seat and get out of the sun" she suggested in a very friendly tone.
James smiled and sat down under a big shade tree to finish his water. When done he handed the young women the cup "Thank you so much, that really helped with the heat."
The two sat and talked for a little while when James decided to ask "I have a question....maybe you can help me with...the Jem Hadar...what are they using in the place of 'white' these days."
The women lost her smile as she looked at James "Before I answer that...I have a question for you....you're not from this camp are you....matter of fact I even wonder if you're from here at all."
James thought for a moment before answering. He had hoped to avoid this question at all costs but this young women may have some of the answers that they were looking for. "Well....truthfully....your right on both counts...I'm not from around here....but I'm looking for some answers and maybe...just maybe I can help your people out also" he stated with a smile.
The women smiled once again "I highly doubt that you can help us but you look like a smart man...and rather good looking....so I'll answer your question" then she paused before continuing "The Jem Hadar are harvesting a plant from the fields over there. The plants are distilled into a liquid which they inject into themselves which makes them even more hostile for a few hours until their bodies absorb the liquid....a lot of good people have died during their 'rant'."
"Their rant?" he repeated "I'm not sure I know what you mean."
"That's when their the most violent after injection....we call that the 'rant'. You know people have died here for asking those kinds of questions....lucky for you I've had enough of this place and really don't care if I die" she replied.
James was rather upset to hear a beautiful young women talk like that....but seeing what this place was like he empathized with her "Thank you so much for the information...you may have helped more than you know. You know your the second person I've talked to today who welcomes death. Maybe things will get better for you and your people soon" he stated.
The young women chuckled "That's wishful thinking Sir....but at least you put a smile on my face and gave me a good laugh...thank you" she said then leaned over and gave James a kiss on the cheek.
James was a little shocked at the women's actions but tried not to show it "Glad I could help make your day a little brighter anyway" he replied with a smile "Now I just need to get a sample of that plant."
The young women looked around then reached into her bag and pulled out a small plant "Here maybe I can help with that" as she started to hand him the plant then pulled back "What's it worth to you....a real kiss perhaps" she said looking James right in the eyes. So James leaned in and gave the women a thoughtful kiss on the lips for a few seconds which she rather enjoyed "Thank you Sir....you just made my day...actually my whole year" she replied with a chuckle as she handed James the plant "Be careful you don't get caught with that or it could cost you your life...and that would be such a waste."
James just smiled "Thank you and I'll be careful. I'm glad I was able to make your day memorable for you" he said with a smile then turned and carefully headed out of the village slowly being extra careful not to draw attention to himself.
When James made it back to the Lab he knew he would have to tell Heather about his encounter just to clear his own mind and the fact they didn't keep secrets from each other. Then he smiled to himself "What I do for Science."
Now he would wait for Tara to return from the village.
