Mission:
A Patrol and Supply mission
Location: Sick Bay
Timeline: Current
ON:
After returning to the ship the first thing Kristian had done was head to her quarters for a shower and a change of uniform. Grabbing her lap coat Long made her way to sick bay. Walking in her eyes taking in everything. Seeing the kids getting their physicals nodded. Seeing the Vulcan life form on a bio bed away from the kids is where she headed next. On the way she picked up a medical tri-coder and made her way over. "How is she?" Krisitian asked scanning her and checking the readings.
Bjorgo saw the CMO come over, clean and dressed like the professional she was. He answered her query. "Still sleeping like a baby. All her bioscans, when compared to Vulcan physique, seem to be all in the green. No pun intended," he said, in reference to the green, copper based blood they had.
Silk also gave his boss a nod of hello as she came in and approached. "We're hoping the thermal blanket helps to kickstart something. Get brain function rolling, all that."
"Any idea how long she's been in stastus?" Kristian asked "If she is Vulcan she's a different species, I met one similar to to her when I was on Denlobia," Kristian commented as she ran a few more scans "I'm reading faint brain activity so something is happening."
"I haven't determined the amount of time she has been in stasis," admitted Bjorgo. "Figured that could wait until we made sure she could be awoken with no issues. So far, seems she'll be fine. There is a ton of etched writings within the capsule, in an unknown language, along with pictographs or hieroglyphs that I can't decipher just yet."
As the other two were speaking Silk had gone around Long to the head of the bed, on the woman's left side. He ran his tricorder around her head, focusing each sweep on the ridges next to her eyes. Bending at the waist he got his face in close, looking them over physically. "Can't tell if these ridges serve a purpose, or just a part of her visage, like a Cardassian."
Deep within the recesses of a darkened mind a light began to develop. This was brought on by the fact that the body was detecting sounds and smells it was unfamiliar with. Whatever was near to her body it stank and caused her lips to part slightly as a short breath was taken in, the nostrils flaring along with that action. Her body was huffing, like a feline, to determine its olfactory input. Her left cheek could feel something breathing near to her, next to her face, and her brain told her that that breath was what stinks.
Sean had caught the huffing and stood up and took half a step back. "Did you see that? I swear she's huffing. She must have caught whiff of me or something else that caused a reaction."
Tore looked down at the face of the woman. "I missed it. But, look at her chest. It's rising and falling like one would expect when waking." The biobed monitors showed that all her bodily functions were getting stronger and her body was returning to normal. "I can hear a strong heartbeat, too."
Zenni came into Sickbay, and like Green today, was wearing her Starfleet uniform with her Meji equipment belt around her waist for her gear. Seeing the woman on the biobed she gave a grin as she came to stand at the foot of the bed. She could sense the mind within, waking up and confused, but not fearful. "She's coming around, Doctors. That is one strong mind," she added. "Focused, diligent."
"Most Vulcans are," Kristian commented as she pulled out a stethoscope from her pocket, seeing some odd looks "I keep one handy as there are times I want to hear the heart beats a different way," Putting it on she listened to the woman's heartbeat. Before taking it off and putting it back in her pocket "Her body temp is still too low, get another blanket on her. Are the restraints really necessary?"
Tore gave a shrug. "I don't think so but Commander Green wanted us to be cautious. When Nira woke she sprang out ready to fight so Green had that in mind."
"I don't sense fear and hostility," Zenni added. "More like curiosity and confusion."
The left arm of the woman made as if to raise up, but it lifted maybe half an inch and then the restraint held it back. Several light tugs were given before the arm rested again. Then the right arm did it, and again, stopped after a few tries.
Kahn looked at Long. "Kris, I say we chance it. With two blokes and two bettys here, I think we can handle it if she gets physical."
Silk nodded agreement but didn't say anything. Instead, he took up a hypo with a strong sedative in it. "If she misbehaves I'll hit her with this and she can drool on the floor."
Zenni gave him a pseudo-stinkeye, unable to control her grin at the Marine's forthright attitude even when he was trying to remain lighthearted.
"That could scare her more," Kristian said removing the restraints. "I can erect a level ten force field around her if she wakes up violent."
Zenni couldn't help herself. "Looking at Silk would scare anyone," she giggled.
Sean gave a lip sync; 'bite me'. But, he did step back a pace from the bed, just to keep any fright to a minimum.
Tore grinned to himself at the good-natured banter of the crew. Tython had them all wound up like stop watches and it was good to see that stress was now gone. He undid the restraints, being careful to not touch the woman more than needed, especially skin to skin. Vulcans and Romulans did not like physical contact on average, so she may have the same ingrained dislike. "There we are, free to brawl."
Lying there, having felt her arms and legs restrained, the woman gave up, focusing her body's chemistry and antibodies to speed up and get her back to her normal physical stance. This was completely unconscious since her conscious mind was still dealing with who she was, where she was. Then, another being messed with her body at the hands and feet as she felt the restraints being loosened and removed. Her left arm lifted, the hand going to her face to pat and feel around. The other hand followed suit as her eyes began to flutter and try to open, the hands being used to rub them slightly and get them to focus. The other reason for blinking was the bright overhead lighting, something her body had not been privy to for quite some time. Once her eyes adjusted, watering slightly with the effort of adjustment, she then glanced around at the four strange looking people surrounding her. She was on a bed which was soft and comfortable, was not tied down, and these beings were definitely not Iconians. Her hands folded on her belly as she relaxed her arms and remained lying there.
Tore gave her a smile. "Hello there." He noted the look of confusion on her face and he looked up at the others. "She doesn't understand Federation Standard, it seems."
Kahn waited while Bjorgo did his thing, but then after he said his piece on the language she sighed and went around to where Silk had been standing near to her head before he had stepped back. "Zenni," she said, placing the fingers of her right hand on her chest. She repeated it, hoping she would understand it was her name. "Zenni." Kahn motioned at the woman's entire body, making the sign for asking if she wanted to sit up. Of course she got a blank look, as if the woman didn't know if she should. Reaching up to the panel Zenni used the bed controls to have the head of the bed sit up. Again, through sign, she asked if the woman was okay.
Ainkara! Yes, that was her name! She suddenly remembered that as she was sat up in bed, which she allowed to happen since it afforded a better view of the chamber she was in. Ainkara responded in sign by holding a hand up to show it was fine.
"Body temp normal, heartbeat strong and steady, metabolism racing to provide bodily needs," said Silk, reading the panel. "I'd say she's finished with hibernation sickness, Doctor Long."
"I agree," Kristian said "I'm Doctor Long, your on the Federation Starship USS Amandora and your in sick bay. Do you know how long you've been in hibernation or why you were put in hibernation? You need not fear us, we're here to help you."
Ainkara listened to them as they spoke back and forth to each other, watching their mouths as they formed the words they were using, but which she had no understanding. She pointed to her own ear, then made the talk sign with a hand, trying to explain she did not understand.
"Oh, duh," smiled Zenni. "Computer, activate the universal translator and audio through the combadges present." She then looked to the woman in white. "We are speaking. Can you speak?"
Ainkara opened her mouth as if to speak but nothing came out. Again, she tried and again, nothing. It was as if she could not speak, not that she did not want to. She pointed to her throat and gave the chopping sign that she could not make the sounds.
"Just our luck," said Silk. "First Contact and she's a mute."
Ainkara's face lit up with an idea and she held a hand out flat with palm up, then used the other to point from her eyes to her own hand as if it were a book.
Tore understood where she was going with it. "I got this." Using his own tricorder Bjorgo sent the language data from within the capsule to the computer, adding it to the universal translator. Once done he handed a PADD to Ainkara with the symbols and letters on the page from her own hibernation chamber.
Ainkara looked to the PADD, seeing her own language placed beside that of these people. So far they were very kind. It's not that she could not speak at all, just that that part of her brain was still working itself out. But, the visual of her language, known as V'rnan among her people, did wonders to show a comparison to their language. "I..." it came out with a dry croak.
Kristian walked over to a cooler and returned carrying a bottle of water and handed it to Ainkara "This just water, your mouth is dry that's why you can't talk." Kristian looked to Tore "I wish I had my cousin's ear for languages. But I do feel if she gets her mouth and throat wet she'll be able to speak."
Zenni sat on the edge of the bed, looking at the screen with this woman as she angled it so Kahn could see to. Without warning this woman lifted her hand with her first two fingers raised together and she touched it to Zenni's forehead. The shock to her brain was a bit unsettling as this woman, in a split second, had entered her own mind. But, it wasn't invasive, she could feel that. It was done to communicate.
~I am Ainkara. Hello~ the hand pulled back and Kahn's mind was her own again.
"Wow," said Zenni, blinking her eyes a few times. "That was a zinger. Anyway, her name is Ainkara and she says hello. But, it's like talking to my 10 year old cousin. I think she's still defrosting, so to speak."
Silk did back up this time. Like, away from being touched. "Not my thing. A peek into my mind and she'll run away at light speed."
Ainkara accepted the water bottle, examining it until she figured out the screw top. Once open she tilted her head back and the bottle up, drinking down all eleven ounces in one go. And, of course, sucking down water that fast made her belch which caused the kids across the Sickbay to look over and laugh. "Escoos, mey." said Ainkara, smiling at the children as she did so. Now, hearing her talk the computer went to work on the language as Kahn prodded her into saying more things in her own language for the database. So, she spoke in V'rnan and the computer took less and less time to translate. "Where am I?" She asked in her tongue. A nurse brought over a Sickbay combadge for when guests aboard needed a translator, handing it to Long.
Taking the com-badge Kristian thanked her "Your on the Federation Starship USS Amandora I'm Doctor Kristian Long the Chief Medical Officer. My friends call me Kris or Kristian. How are you feeling? And do you know how long and why you were in hibernation."
The Voran's chin dropped as her eyes squinted slightly in thought, looking at empty space as she tried to recall what was when and what was where. "I am unfamiliar with this Federation?" Her mind was becoming more focused by the minute, a typical trait found in almost every Vulcanoid species yet discovered. It was due to their solid brain instead of it being split into hemispheres like others. "Did you defeat the Iconians?" Her face came up, looking into Long's eyes, and there was a healthy dose of wrath behind the eyes as she mentioned the lost civilization. There was no mistaking the hatred for the Iconians. Long was the CMO so all those standing around this woman remained quiet so that Kris could keep engaging her one on one.
"The Federation is better known as The United Federation of Planets. There are many planets in the Federation. As an answer to your question no we didn't defeat them, they were long gone by the time we got to the planet. Your safe here now. No one is going to harm you. Please tell me the last things you remember," Kristian said.
"An alliance of worlds," Ainkara said quietly, more to herself. That was unexpected since last she knew the Iconians were still a galactic power. Her tone came back to the conversation as did her focus. "When I was put to sleep the Iconians had changed. They were angry, aggressive and felt no remorse for other species. They were taken as slave races to be used for the labor of building. The Iconians used to be organic, carbon based life but somewhere along the way they found dimensions that allowed them to change their forms into that of a more crystalline substance. And, with that change they lost their capacity to show compassion. As for dates and times I would need a common frame of reference."
Kahn had her PADD in hand still, and as Ainkara stated what she needed she tapped away for a few seconds then handed it to the Voran. "That is the timeline according to how we understand it. If you know your chronology, please see if any of it coincides with your own reference."
Ainkara gave it a look-see, scrolling pages for a few moments as she was speed reading. "Here. According to your galactic timeline from your Federation I have been in stasis for..." Her eyes widened a bit. "Approximately 1,000 years. The complex you found me in was one of their forward outposts as the Empire was crumbling. Many of the slave races rose up and fought back." She gave an evil grin. "The Voran, included."
"As far as I know that species is long gone," Kristian said "Remember I told you the Federation is made up of may worlds, for example I'm from a planet called Amzock, there are three of us on this ship. Our commanding officer is from the planet Klavor, we have Vulcans, Humans, just to name a few races that come together from different worlds. I want to assure you again your safe here."
"I thank you for that," said Ainkara. "But, I am confused." Her mind was back to full operation. In time she would be speaking their tongue effectively but for now the UT was doing its job. "Did you say that the Voran are long gone, or the Iconians?"
"I met one of your species when I did my internship so yes your people are still around I just don't know where your world is. As for the Iconians, I believe they are long gone. You've had a lot to process and I don't want you to over do it. This must all be very strange to you."
Ainkara's eyes misted up and it took a great amount of self discipline not to start crying even as the tears rolled down her cheeks. "One? Just one? They must have scattered to the stars when they broke free. I...I'm alone. Isolated..." Her voice trailed off in her sorrow.
"You are not alone, Ainkara," said Zenni, taking a hand in her own as a show of compassion and friendship, her own eyes misting as she could Sense the sorrow and pain from this woman as the Core felt the ripples of despair. "The Doctor said one of your people attended her medical school. You and I, together, will scour every Starfleet database to find any clues about your people. That is a solemn vow."
Ainkara squeezed the hand gently. "Your compassion is great for one you don't even know. I will effort to find my people and bring them back to share in this Federation. If I can find them."
Bjorgo spoke. "If there was one in a school, there has to be more out there. Or, we check the records from Kris's medical school and find out who it was so that we can see if they are still in the Federation. "As our Chief Counselor, Zenni, said. We will aid you however we can while we conduct our duties to Starfleet."
Kristian took a seat next to her "I will do just that, I'll reach out to the planet I did my internship on and see if they know where he might be. It's been many years. But I'm sure they'll know and as my colleague just said too there should be a record of where he went. We'll find him. In the meantime I think you've had enough excitement for the day. You need to process what you've been told and what you've learned."
Ainkara nodded at that, swiping the tears from her face and drying her hands on her outfit. "I agree, Doctor. SInce you are the Master physician I will defer to your judgement. Is there a quiet place I can meditate, to aid in my recovery?"
"That can be arranged, Ainkara." Said Kahn. "Quarters of your own, or you may camp out at my place. As the Master Counselor," she gave a grin at that, which caused Ainkara to grin at everyone. "You may need someone to talk to after you meditate, and that is my duty aboard ship. To see to the mental health of the crew. As a guest that makes you crew."
Bjorgo put in his piece. "Our commanding officer, Commodore Cyndi Song, will want to meet you, of course. Once you get a day of rest then I'm sure Doctor Long will allow you to do so. For now, she is correct. Rest and recuperate."
"She'll assign you guest quarters. You can meet the commodore tomorrow. Right now you need rest," Kristian said "You can meet the commodore tomorrow after you've rested and gotten something to eat and a good nights sleep."
Ainkara smiled. "I will do as you direct, Doctors. As for food, that sounds wonderful. I haven't eaten in a thousand years and I am famished."
Zenni gave a giggle. "We can fix that first. Come on, we'll go to my quarters and you can stuff your face to your heart's content. Starships don't run out of food too often." She stood and got Ainkara to her feet.
Ainkara shook hands with everyone, the last of whom was Long. "Thank you, again. When I settle I will find my place here. May the Eternal Flame bless you all your days."
Kristian stood and placed a reassuring hand on her shoulder "I thank you and just tell us what you'd like to eat and we'll see to it you have it."
"I shall see what is offered then choose," smiled Ainkara.
Kahn gave her a smile. "Right this way, Ainkara. My quarters aren't too far away. Would you like some shoes to match your outfit? Our replicators can make any design you want."
"That would be better, yes." Answered Ainkara.
Kahn looked to Kris. "With your permission, Doctor Long?"
"Permission granted," Kristian said "Ainkara I'm only a call away if you need anything."
With that the group broke up
