Mission: The Restroffs (Space Spiders)
Location: USS Amandora Holo deck 1
Timeline: Concurrent

On

Ensign Eva Humphreys has joined ship upon launch but only now was being recognized. Like her hero Uhura, Eva was very efficient in her duties and was sure her communications design for the Brol being would work.

Holodeck One

Will went to the Brol quarters and escorted it to the holideck. Being fitted with the vest Humphreys quickly made her adjustments.

" How's it going Ensign?" Will asked Eva.

" Sir this is only a first attempt remember. All signals are active. The holo program will shows sounds and colors initially. I am ready when you are?" Eva replied.

" Proceed!"

Brol remained still as high pitches of sounds and silences filled the room. Followed then by heat and colors to see how Brol reacted. But Brol did not seem to respond or want to.

Eva pushed deeper to elicit a response from Brol.

" Do you understand what we are doing here Brol?" Will asked aloud.

Brol faced him but did not respond making Will angry as he thought about Amethyst.

Brol then made an interesting reaction as it seemed to understand Will.

" Friend ?" the computer voice called out.

" Brol? We are also your friend." Eva spoke up as she walked over and touched Brol.

" Also Friend? With Brol?"

Will smiled as they had made a break through.

" Good work Ensign. Keep me informed," Will said heading to check on Amethyst.

Amethyst’s Quarters

Amethyst was sitting on her sofa pouring over reports as well as Counselling notes that needed adding to personnel files. She would have slept but the stimulant Tore had given her had yet to wear off. She looked up as the doors opened and Will entered.

" A penny for your thoughts? Old earth saying. How are you feeling?" Will asked her.

“Slightly annoyed” Amethyst sighed. “I know I’ve been pushing myself hard but I didn’t take that stimulant to be told not to help anymore! Fair enough when it wears off I’ll pay the price but I wanted to help. At least with the Brol, how many people get to be friends with a living tree?! It’s an honour.” She paused before continuing. “I feel fine at the moment, so will you let me help or not?”

" Actually yes. The Brol reacted to Eva's touch. If you go down there and verbally commune with it maybe we can speed along the translator process. But you have to not use the telepathy stuff. I heard the Doctor tell you it was not a good thing for you."

Amethyst smiled. "I won't I promise." She stood to head for the door before pausing. "I'm sorry I didn't mean to sound upset with you, I guess I'm grumpy due to being tired. I promise I will sleep when this stimulant wears off."

" I know because I will right there with you." Will smiled as they headed out.

Amethyst nodded and smiled. “I’ll look forward to it.


Back at the Holodeck

Eva had made no real progress past the first words. Looking in Will noticed that.

" Stay out here I want to see if Brol realizes you are here." he whispered to Amethyst.

“Okay” She nodded and remained outside.

Will rejoined Eva at the Arch.

" Any success?" he asked. Eva shook her head no. " Arborman here only has eyes for the Counselor."

" Not good."

Out side the holodeck the voice reappeared to Amethyst.

(( Friend?))

(( I’m here )) Amethyst smiled wondering if she should enter the holodeck. Brol already knew she was there so it would save time. Making her way into the holodeck she smiled warmly at Brol. “Sorry my friend, I’m limited to verbal conversation. I’ve overexerted myself with my Telepathy.”

Brol reached for her with a limb.

(( We are lonely. Missing our friend )) it said telepathically. Eva saw some hertz readings rising.

" Brol Amethyst, your friend needs you to talk like you did to me," Eva told it.

Brol paused.

" Friend is ill? We are sad." Brol replied in the computer voice.

Amethyst grinned. “I’m not ill my friend, I’m just ... not used to using my mind to talk for so long. I’m not as strong as a full blood Betazoid.”

" We can help you feel better...the seeds. " the voice said aloud.

Will jumped in.

" Brol we need to communicate with you this way...it our the way of our kind."

" Our kind communicate differently. It is the way of our kind." Brol replied almost angrily.

“Commander ... Ensign, would you both give Brol and I a moment alone.” She looked at Will giving him a look that said ‘let me handle this’

Once they were alone she turned to Brol. “Forgive them Brol, Human’s communicate verbally, they don’t have telepathic ability.”

" Brol speak with our minds. Verbal is very new to us. We do not have language receptors. But I can help you friend." the computer voice replied. Extending a branch a small prune like fruit appeared.

(( Eat this and you can be like us ))

Amethyst looked at Brol curiously, she slowly raised her hand and took the fruit. “Are you sure it’s safe for me? I’m not like you, we’re different species.”

(( It will be like nothing you've ever known. If you are afraid do not eat it.))

“I’m ... not afraid. I trust you.” She looked at Brol as she put the fruit in her mouth and ate it. “How long ...?” Not sooner had she said it then the effects hit her like a ton of bricks, every voice on the ship was louder than ever before in her mind she screamed as she fell to her knees clutching her head before passing out.

Will ran in and yelled, " What the Hell? You've killed her. TRANSPORTER EMERGENCY BEAM TO SICKBAY."
