Mission:
The Restroffs (Space Spiders)
Location: Bridge
Timeline: current
OFF: Please remember to number your posts.
ON:
Alona arrived on the Bridge, still wearing her Starfleet-like uniform. She saw that the command staff was on the Bridge, with Herculoid and another man she hadn't got to know yet, heading for the starboard lift. "Captain, wait!"
Alona said that loud enough to get everyone's attention; to get them to halt with what they were doing. "The situation is far more complicated than we first believed." She stepped down to command center of the Bridge, close to the XO and CO.
" In what way Centurion ? Please report." Will Raymond answered.
"They are not after our antimatter, Commander." Alona brought up her tricorder, angling so both the XO and CO could see her data. "They are after the waste product: theta radiation. "Those three web bubbles," She pointed out the front viewscreen. "Are filled with theta. As if they were hording it. They seem to feed on theta radiation, and theta will disrupt stable warp fields, cause a range of catastrophic failures on starships, and will eventually kill all organic matter. Our transkinetic chamber, where we store Theta radiation to use in power allocation, is basically, empty. Eventually, the amount will be so depleted that we will lose power to systems all over the ship. Doctor Bjorgo and I were lucky enough to get close enough to observe this issue. It also explains why all these ships are dead in the water, and we're headed there."
Doctor Bjorgo entered the Bridge just as Alona finished her explanation, stepping to center Bridge with the others.
" I am familiar with theta radiation. Doesn't the Amandora employ transkinetic chamber?" Will asked.
Saunders chimed in as the Amandoras Engineer, he nodded. "Yes, Sir, we do use a Trans Kinetic Chamber assembly." He was puzzled, yet enlightened by the idea that the Restroffs would be attracted to such lethal energy waste, at least to humans. "Lieutenant., Commander." He respectfully interjected the two to calm the situation. "The Amandora stores theta radiation as a by-product of the deuterium, crystalline reaction. Not the other way around.” The reaction of deuterium and crystalline assembly creates energy for systems and warp fields. This we will not run out. As a by-product of the matter-antimatter response, we are always producing more theta radiation waste."
He shook his head. "A simple check on the engineering fluvial reprocesses verifies that our trans kinetic storage assembly is a static 78% current.” He turned to the Engineering console and then back.
“A by-product does not power the Amandora's systems. The lights will be on if the Trans Kinetic tank were empty. It is not our energy source. Theta is a by-product, a waste of creating energy."
"The Restroffs, in theory, could accumulate enough theta by-product nearby to prevent fields." He furrowed in thought, "However, the fact remains, the Shuttle Craft Anti Matter did deter the Restroffs."
" Thank you Chief. Centurion what is the threat to the Amandora? Do we need to leave this system? " Will replied.
"I stand by my tactical evaluation of the situation." Alona couldn't believe that all she said went in one ear and out the other. She needed to get off this ship, NOW! "By the 24th century, Starfleet had eliminated the generation of this form of waste product, utilizing a transkinetic chamber to break down the residual antimatter on a subatomic level, and a series of radiometric converters to absorb the resultant theta radiation, recycling the energy and using it to power various ships' systems (this information was found on Memory Alpha, the Trek wiki). Right there in your own Starfleet engineering manuals. An antimatter paste won't work either. When matter and antimatter come in contact with each other it is a violent reaction which will blow out sections of this ship, if not destroy it." She handed her palm PADtLooks ready to the Doctor as she went and took her place at Tactical. She tapped keys before looking up at her commanding officer. "Captain Song, it is my evaluation that if we do not resolve this issue then we will be stuck here, power depleting daily, until we all perish from lack of life support."
"We do need to leave," Cyndi said "But they are a life form and we cannot harm them." turning to the engineer "We've had the warp core shut down, how long to bring it back online? Science I want you to ready a probe with some more anit-matter and a tiny amount to theta and have it ready to launch. We also still need to know if there is anyone alive on those ships out there and if so they'll need help."
Amethyst emerged from the turbolift she’d managed to get some brief rest, a quick nap to rest her mind before she’d decided to get back to work. She looked at Cyndi and Will. “Captain I have concerns about the Spiders, I’m not convinced we made a deal with the queen. Our Brol friend seems to think it could have been one of the queen’s daughters, he seems to think the queen would not agree to a deal so easily.” She paused. “The Brol have also requested that they be returned home soon, the seeds I was given are a gift of fruit trees.”
Will smiled at Amethyst arrival but awaited more information about the issue at hand.
" Captain we need to get out of this system and make repairs. The flight wing is more maneuverable and could stay in system and attempt to make contact with any other ships. " Will suggested.
"Lieutenant Saunders how long to get the warp drive online?" Cyndi asked "We have a ship alongside, we'll tractor it out with us. We'll need to find a planet that will support the Brol and a home for the spiders that has what they need. Unless we can get them a replicator that will supply their needs so they'll stop attacking ships as for the Queen and her daughters they can be dealt with. Matters of diplomacy I can handle."
Bjorgo stepped in closer to the group. "Captain, you did grant me leave to go and try to speak with the Queen," stated Tore. "I think this is the best time to attempt it. With your permission I will board the shuttlepod Alona and I used earlier and return to the coordinates we gathered our data from. They swarmed along the shuttlepod, but never seemed interested in it."
"Permission granted, just be careful and keep in contact with the ship at all times," Cyndi said
Lieutenant Saunders responded to Captain Song, “Capt. I can have the engines for you in 25 minutes, 20 minutes top. If everything is smooth.” He addressed.
More seriously, “I need to point out that any potential theta radiation bubbles from the Restroffs need to be insulated against, so we can achieve a warp bubble to get out of here when needed.”
Saunders calculated in his head. “Judging how large their densities, we need to place an electrodynamic field enhancer around the warp core.”
“I will update you as soon as Engineering is ready.” With that, Saunders politely excused his self from the main bridge to the next turbo lift.
Will looked to Amethyst as their hope to return the Brol seemed unfulfillable.
" I will get with communications and see how there doing with updating the universal translator. You can't keep using telepathy." Will added as he stepped up to that console.
“No ... I can’t” Amethyst offered an apologetic look.
"And Counselor we will save the Brol as well," Cyndi assured her.
Amethyst nodded. “Thank you Captain. They want to get home.”
Bjorgo could see Amethyst struggling with her exhaustion. A burden he could assist with until this mission was over. Going to a medkit on the wall he grabbed a hypo, then to the replicator, ordering a cartridge of Cortropine, a strong stimulant included in standard-issue Starfleet medkits. He set for 2CC's. Once set he then stepped towards her. "This will alleviate your exhaustion for a day. Afterword, you'll have no choice, you will collapse. Yes, or no?"
Amethyst looked at Bjorgo giving the matter some thought, “I understand and agree, so do it.”
Bjorgo gave the Counselor the injection, then handed the hypo to her. "There are three more doses, preset. After those three, if you get that far, the medication will become useless; you'll be extremely exhausted and will pass out." His head came up more for the rest of the Bridge, trying to add humor to break tension, but also to elude to what needed to be done. "I'm sure we'll all be out of here before we know it."
Alona stepped from Tactical, moving to the SCI II standing console, tapping keys to reset the console face to that which she chose. "Chief Saunders, I will assist with engineering reroutes, if necessary."
= Sounds good Lt, I will meet you there, Saunders out = He had tapped his com badge in the turbo lift.
Will returned from the communications console with some good news.
" Communications says they have had a breakthrough. Brol responded to a specific attempt."
Doctor Bjorgo stepped into the aft lift with Alona. "I can't believe you're going back without me," she stated, once inside. The car began to move.
"Not all beings can be communicated with via spoken language. The U-T (Universal Translator) can only reason out a language if the beings think in a similar fashion to other humanoids." Bjorgo was in business mode, knowing the risk he posed to himself. But, the needs of the many and, all that. The lift stopped at a level for main engineering. "You have an appointment, Centurion Alona."
Alona gave a nod as the lift stopped and the door opened. "I don't say this to many people, Doctor. Be safe and return to us."
"That's the plan, Centurion," said Tore. "Until we meet again." He tapped the lift controls and the door closed and off he went to the shuttlebay.
Getting to her deck, and making her way further inside main engineering, Centurion Alona Tal looked around until she found the Chief Engineer looking over the main schematic. A few paces and she got in next to him. "I'm here, Mister Saunders."
Will continued to speak to the others.
" The comm officer says the sensors in the holodeck are able to pick up the inquisite Brol hertz signals too. They can make a vest of sorts and put it on the Brol being. The hertz signals can then be relayed through the holo deck program and produce for us a means of communication similar to empathic algorhythms. Rudamental at first but over time a syntax language will be deciphered." Will told the Captain and Amethyst.
“I can help filter that” Amethyst looked at Will and Cyndi. “The stimulant the doctor gave me will keep me going for a while before I eventually hit the deck.”
" You need to relax Amethyst. Kal needs his Momma not a mental vegetable."
"I agree, and the more you push yourself the worse off your going to be. Once this is over your to take some days off and rest," Cyndi told the counselor "Doctor you'll back me on this as well. Okay people any thing else we need to discuss or are we good to get this going? Help both species and free those trapped ships."
Amethyst understood her Commanding Officers concerns but she couldn’t help but feel a little annoyed. “If you’ll excuse me ...” She nodded to both and started for the turbolift. “I’ll be in my Quarters if anyone needs me.”
Will wanted to follow but knew he had to help Ensign Humphreys set up the Brol comm set. He knew the effects on Amethyst was taking its tole.
