{Deck 5 - Main Lab}
Lieutenant Hunt walked into the Lab at zero eight hundred anxious to get started on examining the rock and soil samples that he and the Lieutenant had collected the day before.
Starting with the rock samples Armen setup the Stereoscope to examine the specimens since they were much too thick to be examined under a Microscope. Checking each category and strata he noticed the rocks were very similar to what you would find on most other Planets. The only real difference was the distinct strata layers that could be seen; probably thousands and thousands of years in the making. After making some notes on his PADD he would now turn his attention to the different soil samples.
The soil samples had been sifted into three main categories depending on the sizes of the different components. Starting with the finest of the samples Armen made up slides for both the Stereoscope as well as the Microscope. Examining the slides he quickly realize that the soil was made up mostly of diatomaceous earth....that is earth made up largely of diatoms which are single celled algae with a cell wall of silica.
After jotting down some notes about the fine soil he also noted that this type of soil could be used for water filtration systems as well. The next batch was about what you'd expect from soil samples...very small stones, fossilized roots, and things of that nature; not very notable but he made notes just the same.
Now he was ready to examine the last of the soil samples which were comprised of the largest particulates. Grabbing a pair of gloves, Armen started looking over the samples when he noticed as unusual amount of dirt and dust on his gloves "Hmmm....that's rather odd....usually any dirt hangs onto the items" he thought as he rubbed the piece to get all the dirt off. After a minute of thought he decided to take all the remaining samples over to the sink and hit them with the hose.
Moments later he allowed the samples to drain for a minute then walked them over to his work station. As he pawed through the samples he picked out a half dozen of so creamy colored items and placed them in a dish.
Armen grabbed the dish and went over to the Stereoscope and placed two of the items onto the plate and began to examine them. After a few minutes "Oh shit!!!" he stated then tapped his Comm "Lieutenant Zolon please come to the Main Lab" then he went back to looking at the samples.
A few minutes later Zolon walked into the Lab and right over to the Lieutenant "What's going on....you wanted to see me" she queried.
Looking up from his work "Yes, you need to take a look at these and tell me what you think" he commented "I think I know what they are but I want you to confirm it."
Cassandra peered through the Stereoscope for a couple of minutes before facing Armen "They look like bone fragments....although I can't tell if they're animal or sentient" she explained being a little surprised at what she saw.
"At least we're on the same page.....I thought they were bone fragments too" he replied feeling pretty good about being correct in his assumptions.
"Get these down to the Anthropology Lab on Deck 15 and we'll see if she can identify these or not" Cass ordered then tapped her Comm "Lt.JG Peck we're sending you some bone fragments that we discovered on the surface....analyze them and give me a report at what you find."
"Absolutely, as soon as I've had a chance to look them over and maybe run a few tests then I'll let you know Lieutenant" Peck replied.
"Good I'll be waiting for your report....Zolon out" Cass stated being rather curious over their findings.
Turning to Hunt "Well looks like you've had a very productive day Lieutenant, job well done" Cass commented "When you're finished I'll expect a full report on your findings as well."
Armen smiled "No problem Lieutenant.....I'll have it on your desk by midday tomorrow" he replied then whispered "And maybe we can get to have that dinner I promised you.....that is if you're still up for it."
"Sounds good and I'll be looking forward to reading your report. As far as dinner is concerned just tell me when and where" Cassandra replied with a smile.
