Mission:
BUGS OH NO!!
Location: various
Timeline: current
After dropping off his trunk in his office, Major Hurd went to his quarters. After a quick shower and uniform change, Hurd felt like a new person. A slow smile crept across his face as he chuckled to himself. Thing for a few moments, he decided ton address his men. Changing yet again, Hurd out on his Dress Uniform. Quicking checking to make sure his medals, Officers Sword, and .45 were in the correct places, Hurd tapped his combage and said, "Captain West, assemble the Marines, i want to address them".
West stood up from his desk and tapped the panel for Marine Country-wide comms. A boatswain's whistle sounded, causing the bustle of the entire berth to die down almost instantanously.
"General Muster, general muster at 0800." The marines looked at each other, realizing they had less than five minutes to assemble, and marine country exploded into motion.
By 0800, the Marines had assembled, forty strong, awaiting address. Trace tapped his comm badge. "Ready sir."
Hurd walked in right as West was finishing speaking. Nodding at his XO, he walked to the front of the room. Snapping off a salute, Hurd then looked in the etes of every Man and Women, finding none of them lacking "The Stuff", that in Hurd's mind made Marines". Clearing his throat?, he began to speak.
"For those of you who don't know", Hurd said in a booming voice, "My name is Major David Hurd Sr, Commanding Officer of this detachment and 3rd Officer of the Amadora." Pausing, he searched the sea of faces before continuing. "Now, before we continue, and i demand absolute honesty with what i am about to ask, and rank matters zero right now, tell me what, if anything, you have heard about me, rumors and all."
Warrant Officer Barnes looked to either side of himself with no marines even looking like they wanted to say anything. Every fucking one of them was new to Amandora and had not had time to listen to scuttlebutt. Himself included. As the highest ranking NCO available for this rabble of leathernecks he made his way through the bodies to make himself seen and presentable. "I haven't heard a damn thing, Major. Hell, I didn't even know what you looked like, aside from your personnel pic, until just now. I'm just glad to see you're actually a living being and not some holo."
Chuckling, Hurd said, "Hell Son, i like yhat attitude!!!!"". Shaking his head and composing himself, he continued "Well Marines insm indeed Human." "And you may also hear the terms hard headed,HMFIC, and disciplinarian associated with my name." "But above all i am fait, a hard task master, but fair." Do your job right with honor, courage, ferocity and justice." ?"That men and women, are the hallmarks of what define a Marine.
"And know this as well, i will always be the first upon the field of Battle, and the last ti leave. And this i vke, Everyone comes home, living missing and dead, we all come back. Hurd Scanned eyed of the ctowd before adding, This Leader, as he should, will always be right in the thick of the fight with you".
West spoke up as soon as the Major showed he was finished with his first bit. "Chief Barnes has had the marines doing PT, cleaning the berth-standard duties when ship bound and nothing better to do."
"Even took 'em through the ol' break down and clean it routine, Major. If any of the weapons misfire or have issues then that's on me, Sir." Barnes had sat around and talked to the marines while putting them through field dressing and cleaning their weapons and gear to keep it in shape for that unexpected call to arms. Of course, there was a bottle or two being passed around as they did so. If you can't trust the person next to you, and don't know their quirks, then that can lead to a break down in the machine. "They all passed Basic and have had a few months each in their respective units as residents. They are yours, Sir. They belong to Amandora, now."
Hurd gave a nod and then proceeded to go through the atypical CO's speech about his expectations and what not. All the marines listened intently, none of them shirking their attention to the CO. When he finished West gave the 'as you were' and dismissal, the crowd of green breaking up. Barnes gathered them together again, in the bathroom/shower area where there was room to do so. "Alright, I has a plan. The fleeters are enjoying the planet, so we should too. Gather personal weapons and gear up for tactical exercises, planetside. When the exercises are over we can then strip down to just our duds and enjoy some sunshine and turf. Y'all, in?"
He got a resounding response of yes. Anything to break the monotony of looking at the same walls every day. So, they all broke apart, laughing and talking excitedly as they prepped themselves for planetary excursions. Once all of them were decked out they headed to a cargo bay and used the cargo/emergency transporter to beam them all down at once, as a unit.
LC (Lance Corporal) Jacobs took in a lung full of fresh air. "Would you smell that. Oh, man, Chief, thanks for this."
Barnes had squatted and reached down to scoop up some soil, bringing it up to his nose and sniffing as he rubbed it between his palms to let all the odors out. It was awesome, and he could smell the richness in the soil, good for planting and for life. He stood as he clapped his hands free of dirt. "Let's go make sure the colonists know we're not invading, just enjoying their planet for exercises." He started moving towards the edge of the main colony, all his marines following along, some picking flowers and enjoying their colors and scents as they went.
