#169 A Misunderstanding

Posted on Sat Jan 28th, 2023 @ 1:07pm by Captain Rogue Green {Meji} & Lieutenant JG Marcus Resch {Meji} & Lieutenant JG Ainkara "Kara" {Meji}

Mission: BUGS OH NO!!
Location: Bridge
Timeline: current/somewhere in between

ON:

A computer system's diagnostic mode or diagnostic cycle is used to ascertain whether or not there were problems or inconsistencies in a starship's main systems, including the transporters. Cadet Ainkara had been tasked with running diagnostics on the lateral sensor array by Ensign Resch. So, as per orders, she was now in the main deflector control room. Sending the Bridge a message that the lateral sensors would be down until she could complete a level 1 diagnostic, she got started. After a 15 minute system diagnostic, with the system offline, she found no inconsistencies, made note of that in her log and rebooted the lateral arrays.

With her task complete at level 1, Ainkara then began a level 4 diagnostic, while the system was up and running. Again, it took about 15 minutes and showed no discrepencies. Satisfied that the arrays were at nominal she again made note of it in her log, not only for Operations but for the Science department, as well. Leaving deflector control Ainkara made her way to the Bridge and approached the main OPS station, making sure to approach from the Ensign's left so as not to surprise him. When he looked up her way she handed him her PADD. "Lateral array diagnostics completed, Sir. The system is nominal."

The look of surprise on Resch's face said it all. Taking his eyes away from her he then tapped at the PADD for a few minutes as he read it, speed reading to get to the finer points. She was correct, all had been done correctly and she had even logged her data. "Well done, Cadet." He stood up and waved in a relief, who took the seat without hesitation. He got Ainkara walking with him, going to the aft section of the Bridge. "That was unexpected, Ainkara. I didn't expect you to get it done that quickly."

Ainkara quirked one eyebrow. "It is what you asked for, Ensign Resch. Why is that surprising?"

"Not getting it done," said Marcus. "The timeliness of it. Most folks take it casual. It was not a priority so you can take it slow and easy when assigned a duty."

"I see," she said, her eyebrow going back to normal, even though she was confused over why anyone would hesitate and take their time when working. But, if it was efficient for them then she would not voice her concerns. "It is who I am, Sir. Is there another assignment available?"

"Several, actually." Answered Resch. "Among our many responsibilities are the transporters and the quartermaster duties. We clean, rearrange, and maintain all quarters not in use. If in use, and they need a change, we get with engineering and make it happen. Some like small workout areas, others like myself, prefer a kitchen of some kind to be added. So, with that in mind we need a check on all unoccupied quarters for maintenance needs or for sterilization. Also, I would like you to bone up on your transporter operation. You may get called to man one in a pinch."

Ainkara took all that in. 'Bone up', she thought. That must mean become familiar. That she could do. "I will see to it, Sir. I will try and accommodate your suggestion to waste time by being...slower."

Green, manning the Bridge for the Commodore, had been listening to the conversation with her augmented hearing. When Ainkara said that she grinned to herself before getting up and walking over to the pair. "Everything okay, you two?" She decided to play ignorant. Also, she had received word about those who had left the ship and one of them required an update for Mister Resch.

"Fine, Commander." Resch was also fighting a grin, seeing that Ainkara had misinterpreted what he had said earlier. It was amusing but also needed to be explained. As he opened his mouth to speak Green lightly touched his forearm to stop him.

"Allow me," said Green. She then looked at the Voran. "Ainkara, he did not mean for you to waste time, or anyone else for that matter." She gave the Ensign a pseudo-sour look before her eyes went back to the Cadet. "He was saying that if you take your time, and not waste energy with speed, there will be no mistakes made. Accuracy over acceleration, in other words."

Ainkara contemplated all that was said as it was said, understanding. "As I expressed to Mister Resch, Commander. It is who I am. Seeing as how I am a vulcanoid then I have studied the Vulcan culture and see that their work ethic is similar to my own. That level of efficiency is ingrained in me. However, to maintain Mister Resch's comfort level I will acqiesce to his suggestion."

Both Green and Resch smiled, though Marcus was less pleased by what she had said.

Resch's face went back to a mild expression. "I never said you couldn't be you, Cadet. I was stating my own surprise at how quick you were. It wasn't meant to tell you to slow down."

Green could feel a bit of angst from Resch so she stepped in as Number One. "Misunderstandings are a part of life, both of you. Let us move passed this and get back to being on the same team, shall we?" When she received a nod of acceptance from both she went on. "Good. As for you, Mister resch, I have received word that those who left will not be returning to Amandora. Therefore, you will be promoted to OPS Manager instead of assistant, effective immediately. Also, I am field promoting you to lieutenant junior grade, and have sent the promotion request to Starfleet Command. Until such time as it becomes official your field rank will hold." She then broke into a huge smile, shaking his hand. "Congratulations, Lieutenant!"

Those around them had overheard and they too congratulated him and shook hands.

Ainkara gave a grin, hearing his good fortune overcoming her own misgivings for the previous misunderstanding. She shook his hand. "Congratulations, Lieutenant Resch. My apologiues for my lack of understanding for human nuances."

"No apology needed, Ainkara," Resch said, shaking her hand in return. "I did word that in a confusing way, so the apology goes both ways. And, thank you for your efficiency, this department needs that. You ever want a slot it's yours."

Green remained quiet as she let them talk it out, seeing they had come to an understanding.

"I will consider it, thank you." Ainkara answered.

"Anyway, here you go," Resch handed Ainkara the PADD back. "All the empty quarters are listed, so just hit them one at a time and see what they may need. Simple as that."

"I will, Sir. I shall get underway." Giving both of them a nod of goodbye, Ainkara turned and entered the lift.

"She makes me tired," Said Resch with a chuckle.

Green shook her head and grinned. "I think we found the one person aboard who will get a commendation from efficiency alone. She is a work horse. But, back to my chair. Mom says get back to yours too, young man." She winked and walked away, with Resch turning to go back to his own seat.

Two junior officers on the Bridge had looked at each other after Number One spoke, lip syncing 'mom' to each other with a questioning look. If Resch and Green were related this was the first they had heard about it. Their hearing that would lead to rumors around the ship.
