Runabout Mississippi

Karina had a big grin on her face, she was able to convince Starfleet to send a runabout over to the USS Amandora. They boarded a danube class runabout. It was sufficient, at least she had a rack to sleep on. They were four new crew members getting ready to join the shift and for crew members disembarking she knew she would have to hand over the keys as it were to the officers disembarking.

Karina was currently sitting in the cockpit by yourself with the ship on autopilot, at the moment she was monitoring the stations control panel while listening to some classic rock from the late 20th century.

Karina really like the soothing sounds of the eagles, a rock group from that time frame. She always thought that term was kind of silly a rock group, they had nothing in common with geographical rocks so why were they called Rock in the first place?

At the moment Karina felt like a glorified babysitter which is why she was spending most of her time in the cockpit as she could, not because she was a workaholic but because she didn't want to be around a bunch of enlisted men and women.

There is one other officer but that officer was a male, and he was covering the late shift and she was covering the day shift. Both officers were certified to fly. But it wasn't his primary responsibility. She was grateful so at least that way she would have to sleep all day in the cockpit just on the off chance something might happen.

They were 3 days into their journey to the ship, and nothing to report it was a pretty standard flight for the most part. Karina was taking advantage of this time, by studying up on the starship specs for a Galaxy class starship.

As she feared she would be stuck on a cruiser but at least a cruiser had three shuttle bays and a few shuttles in them, so there was hope that she might be able to get out and do some milk runs in a shuttle.

Karina was kind of curious so why was a commodore in command of a starship and not a star base? Most admirals that she knew a few were on bases and others on planetary stations. From what she read the commodore was a very capable officer, and she felt like she would be able to learn a lot from her.

Karina also studied up on the first, second and third officers, she was kind of surprised that a marine officer would be third in command but it is what it is. She just hoped that the third officer had some bridge training on the off chance that the other three officers are incapacitated.

The scene starts to fade away with Karina singing along to the eagles.

Shuttle Bay: USS Amandora

Karina walks out of the runabout. She was a little taken with the mere size of the shuttle bay. She had envisioned a small room packed with shuttles. But it was the opposite. The room was massive, and Karina wasted little time walking onto the deck. She was also surprised to see Commander Green at the deck. "Lieutenant Junior Grade Karina Johnson, requesting permission to come aboard?" She said with a big grin on her face.

"I want these units stored on the starboard side of the bay, people!" Shouted Green, to be heard over all the echoes of labor and the other voices all talking to each other. "USS Euphrates is starboard side, not port! Get on it!" As the cargo lifters got to work Ro walked a circle for a few paces, then came up short when she was approached by a younger woman. After the introduction Ro shook hands. "Commander Ro Green, Exec. Welcome aboard, Lieutenant Johnson. Got our new medical officer today, now our new driver. Starfleet is getting better, it seems." She gave a teasing grin.

Karina reached out to shake the commanders hand. A firm and steady grip. Clearly the Commander meant business. But she did detect a hint of kindness in her voice. "Thank you Sir, I think." Karina said with a grin on her face. She was not sure how to respond to Starfleet getting better. That comment was very broad, maybe that was on purpose she thought.

Green chuckled. "Don't take it personally, Karina. Like all military style organizations Starfleet can be a bugger at times. All the 'hurry up and wait'." By the look in her eyes suddenly, it dawned on Green what was going on. "Wait. You just stepped off that runabout, didn't you?"

"I did. She's right over there sir." Karina said as she pointed the older design of the danube class runabout. She was almost as old as the galaxy class design itself was. But she got the job done. Despite being over thirty years old the old engines were purring like a kitten.

Green looked over at the older small starship, her engineer's eyes always admiring the lines of all space vessels. "Well, we'll drop her off somewhere. On Amandora we have one Runabout, the USS Euphrates. I think you caught me shouting about it," she giggled. "Also, by bending the Commodore's ear, we got rid of our warp shuttles and went with Delta Flyers. Plus, we do have one bay full of fighters. Euphrates is usually my boat of choice when I go on excursions."

Karina had a big grin on her face. "Starfleet had mentioned as much to me, I would be happy to drop her off when the time is among us sir." She said, thinking to herself, that she was a qualified pilot, and more importantly than that. It would be another chance to fly the Mississippi again.

Ro halted long enough to rub her chin in thought. "Ya know, that's an opportunity. Two dedicated runabouts would be better than one. Hmm, I'll have to see what we can do with that." She looked at Karina. "Apologies, Lieutenant Johnson, there are times when my brain is zipping along at light years per second. Anyway, you'll be Bridge staff, Alpha shift due to your status as Chief. The Commodore and I do not demand you on the Bridge every day, but be sure to assign people that can get this behemoth moving when we need it to."

Karina had a twisted grin on her face, she wondered if she could manage to weasel her way into the fighter. Her first love it was always to small crafts, but she knew if you wanted to advance the captain someday, she would have to take on a department roll. "Any chance I might be able to squeeze in some flight hours and one of these bad boys?" Karina asked as she looked over to the fighters.

Green gave her a smile in return. "Shuttle bay 2 is designated for the fighters only. Built by the Commodore's people. They call them Vipers. Talk to Captain Rivers, or Warrant Money, I'm sure either of them would be fine with a flight." Ro gave her a level gaze. "But, unfortunately, I have to cut this meeting short, Lieutenant. Being Number One comes with a daily workload. Get settled, get to know your new home, and welcome aboard, Karina. Take care." With that said Green turned from the younger woman and made her way towards a bay exit.

Karina snap to the position of attention to show the proper respect afforded to a first officer. "Aye Sir." She said with the smile on her face, thinking about the fact that she's going to need to talk to the Marine Commander if she wants to get a chance to play one of the fighters as she took another look around the bay, she had a good feeling about the assignment despite the shipping the 30 year old makeshift carrier. The scene starts to fade away.
