Amethyst was sitting in a chair close to the coffee table in her office, a pile of PADDs to her left all for crew evaluations and she was starting at the top with Commodore Song.
Cyndi had received word to see the counselor, while physic evaluations were not high on her list they fell in the same category as the dreaded annual physical and she did everything she could to avoid them. Cyndi arrived at Amethyst's office and palmed the door chime.
“Come in” Amethyst smiled as she looked up from the PADD she was holding.
"You know I'm not a big fan of theses," Cyndi said taking a seat
“Commodore, please come in and make yourself at home.” Amethyst motioned to the empty seats. “Would you like anything to drink?”
"No, I'm good I had breakfast with my husband not long ago," Cyndi replied
Amethyst nodded. “Thank you for coming, I know evaluations aren’t everyone’s cup of tea. Most CO’s seem to avoid them like the plague.” She grinned as she took a seat and picked up a PADD for notes. “So how would you say your role aboard ship is going?”
"That depends on what you mean? As commanding officer it's fine, but there are also times when I feel I'm not in command. I get arguments on decisions I make," Cyndi commented.
Amethyst nodded. “As CO you are the one that makes the overall decision on matters aboard ship. Disputes are an integral part of that role they happen, it’s how you deal with problems that matters.”
"I'm aware of this and I do have the final say and it ruffles feathers when I do. But command would not have me here if I was not qualified to do the job," Cyndi said
“Exactly” Amethyst nodded. “How does it make you feel when you have to make the decision to send crew out , knowing that they may not return?”
"Every time I send someone out I know there is a chance they'll not return just like this ship is subject to getting blown up in a battle. I've been on a ship that was destroyed a few of us escaped in escape pods and I have had to contact a family over a deceased crew member. Not something I want to ever do but it is something every commanding officer has to face," Cyndi replied
Amethyst nodded. “Have you ever had times where you’ve doubted your actions? Or struggled to make up your mind what to do?”
"Yes, several years ago I was field promoted to executive officer. My captain at the time caught an unknown virus and swore the crew was out to get him. I assumed command and had my captain placed under arrest and had him confined to the brig. Should I have had him arrested? Probably not, I should have just confined him to quarters pending medical review but we'd just been through a horrific battle and the ship came first. We were badly crippled," Cyndi said "Did I do the right thing? At the time I thought I had, I had to go under a review inquiry as I'd had my captain arrested. Would I do it again? Yes."
Amethyst nodded, so far she couldn’t see any reason not to give Cyndi a clear evaluation. “It sounds to me as though you did what had to be done. If you hadn’t it could have cost lives.” She tapped her PADD. “Now Commodore, do you have any questions for me? Anything you need to talk about?”
"Not that I can think of," Cyndi replied "I'm looking forward to spending time with my husband while he's aboard."
“Your husband?” Amethyst smiled. “That must be the man I’ve heard mention of on the ship’s grapevine. In that case I won’t hold you up. I’m satisfied that you are fit for duty Commodore, I’ll sign off on your evaluation.”
"Thank you Amethyst," Cyndi said getting to her feet "He surprised me and I don't know how long he's staying. I've not seen him in a few months."
“Well I hope you enjoy your time together Commodore.” Amethyst smiled warmly as Cyndi headed out of the door, before picking up her next PADD.
