After an argument with her mother, the Queen was not happy but understood her daughter's wishes and relented to let her go. Cyndi sent work to the ship requesting Nix return to her home on Klavor. Two horses were saddled and ready, one very gentle Nix and her usual mount.
The Lieutenant JG materialized back on Klavor carrying a few essentials just in case Cyndi and her were to run into any unexpected trouble. Everything was hidden in Nix's uniform but were at hand if needed; as any Infiltration Specialist would carry that was worth anything.
Nix saw the Commodore standing by two animals which she assumed were....what they called horses. She walked over and smiled "Good morning Commodore....it's a nice day to go exploring."
Cyndi checked her phaser and returned it to it's holster "My mother is not happy about this. I've never disobeyed her, but she made it clear that she's not happy. My father is on my side so they need to work it out between them. This is Mast, he's my son's horse and very gentle." Cyndi patted a gray horse, and then pointed to a black one "That's Space, he's my mount. Are you ready?"
Two grooms stood by each horse holding them.
Nix nodded yes and watched the Commodore mount her horse then followed suit; this wasn't much different than a Glindos on Trill. After a few moments Nix got right into the groove and was handling her horse well. She rode up beside Cyndi "So is this old Palace far" she asked.
"It's about a thirty minute ride, the terrain rough as we don't go there anymore so the trail is not maintained," Cyndi said "I also convinced the guards to stay away too. I'm armed as are you." Cyndi urged her mount into a ground eating canter which was a smooth gait.
Nix gently gave her horse a nudge with her heels in the sides then the animal quickly caught up to Cyndi's horse. Being a unkept trail Nix thought it best to follow the Commodore until they reached the Palace.
When they arrived at the Palace Nix dismounted her horse and tied the reins around a tree branch. Then going over to Cyndi "Commodore when we reach the entrance please let me go first to check things out, just in case" she stated hoping the Commodore would let her do her job.
Cyndi dismounted and dropped her reins onto the ground. "I'll concede to that, but let me show you where the entrance is," leading the way to the crumbling steps Cyndi pointed to an ornate door. Pulling out a key she inserted it into the old lock and after a few seconds the door swung inward "His office is straight ahead, just past the main staircase then to the left. It's under the stairs for his safety. He died when I was ten."
Nix nodded and carefully stepped in with phaser drawn as she walked angle stepping and looking around at every corner. Shortly she made her way to the office without incident. Then called out to the Commodore "It's all clear."
Cyndi walked into the old Palace and shook her head, the decay was worse than she remembered. Catching up with Nix, they walked to her grandfather's office, despite no power the retina scan still worked. Once cleared the door opened. Stepping in the lights came on. "It's been a long time since I was in here." Going to an old cabinet she opened it and removed several files, key cards and his old lap top. "What I need should be in these." Opening a bag she'd brought Cyndi put everything into it. "I need to get this either restored or have it destroyed."
The Lieutenant thought for a moment "With respect Commodore, I would have it restored.....that may very well hold some answers to what's been going on with that Usher fellow....but of course the choice is yours" Nix commented; then she heard something as did Dunjen. Turning to Cyndi "Wait her I need to check something out."
Nix walked to the door and pulled out her phaser as she carefully popped her head out the door and looked around. She saw a man wandering around like he didn't know where he was going. She holstered her weapon and pulled out a knife from a slit in her Uniform leg and quietly walked around behind a column. As the man walked past Nix walked up behind him and grabbed him around his neck with her arm while placing the tip of the knife against his neck "One wrong move and I'll stick you...who are you."
The man was panicked but didn't move a muscle as he said in a quivering voice "I'm.....I'm a friend of the Princess....I rescued her on Glintok.....my name is Amos."
Nix eased up her grip just a little "We'll see if you are who you say you are" she put away the knife and pulled the man's arm up behind his back and pushed him forward "Now move and if your not being truthful....well let's just say you'll regret it."
The two entered the office as Nix looked at Cyndi "Commodore this man says he's a friend of yours" she stated.
Cyndi set the bag behind the door to keep the contents safe and instead picked up a fake bag. "Yes Amos is a friend although I'm surprised to find him here. The path to this old Palace is known to very few. Amos my friend what brings you here?"
Hearing that Nix released the man "Sorry if I hurt you but with everything that has happened to the Commodore recently, I'm not taking any chances" she said matter of factly.
Amos sort of grinned as he rubbed his shoulder "You don't have to tell me what she went through.....I saw it first hand" he stated then turning to Cyndi "I've been keeping an eye on you to make sure your safe" then he paused before continuing "I followed you here for the same reasons Princess."
"How did you follow us?" Cyndi asked "In any event I am safe, at least as safe as I can be. Usher is long gone, I hope. I've contacted your family and they're glad to hear your okay. They're sending a ship to pick you up. Your wife hopes you'll find a good job and stay away from the life you've been leading."
"I saw the trail that you both took and followed it until I got here" Amos explained "Thank you so much Princess for contacting my family....it will be good to see them again. And yes I think a dull job would be a welcome change from what I've been doing these past few years."
Then Nix spoke up "Also it should greatly lengthen your life expectancy if you find a new line of work" she stated not wanting to point out the obvious.
"Amos, no job is dull," Cyndi commented "Every job has it's rewards, it's how you do it and how you feel about your job is what's important. I'll never forget how much you helped me, because of you I'm back with my husband, my little boy and back to my command. So what do you think of my grandfather's Palace?"
Amos smiled as he kept one eye on the other women "I welcome a normal life again....being with my wife and children" he stated then continued "I just couldn't stand by any longer watching what Usher was doing to you and then selling you off like a piece of livestock....I'm not proud of what I've done but maybe by helping you a can atone for at least some of my mistakes." then he looked around "The Palace looks a little run down but I bet it was magnificent during your Grandfather's reign as King."
"It was the most beautiful place I'd ever seen. I would love to restore it but that falls on my parents as the ruling authority here. I have no say over some things," Cyndi commented "My mother and I had a fight over my coming here. Amos I'm just grateful you helped me. That's a debt I can never repay, and one neither my husband, my parents or anyone that serves under my command I'm sure feel the same way."
Amos was lost for words at that point, but he managed to say "I'm just glad I was able to help you in getting your life back" After a few moments "I should get back to Town in case my ride shows up" turning to Nix "You keep the Princess safe" then looking at Cyndi "I hope you have a long and happy life with your family."
At that point Amos left the Palace and made his way back to Town being quite anxious to see his family once again after having been away for such a long time.
After they had gathered all of the records, documents, and recordings Nix look to Cyndi "I think perhaps we should start making our way back to you house then you can start to sort through all this stuff."
"I owe that man my life," Cyndi said as she picked up the two bags, and headed from the old Palace. She paused long enough to secure the door. "I think your right, I have two bags, one contains the real files and the other dummy files just in case. Not that I'm expecting trouble. But this is too important to my people. I'm also going to send Amos and his family something. I just don't know what yet. Let's get this back to my house. Care to help dig into it with me?"
The Lieutenant JG just smiled "Yes I'd be happy to help you sort through these things...at least for a little while before I return to the Ship" she replied being quite pleased to be of use.
"There is going to be a lot. I'm going to need evidence either way so when Commander Kahn talks to Admiral Stone there can be no doubt. I have a private office in my house," Cyndi replied.
Nix mounted her horse and looked at Cyndi "I guess we better be going then....lead the way Commodore" she stated and the two made their way back down the trail to Cyndi's house.
