ON:

Paul woke up and looked beside him, Cyndi was laying on her side with one arm under her pillow and the other tucked up under the blanket. Getting quietly out of bed as not to disturb her, he pulled on his pants, slipped his feet into his slippers and headed down from the loft bedroom and into the kitchen where his mother was busy making breakfast.

Seeing her son enter Enid smiled at him “Cyndi still asleep?”

Paul nodded as he went to the coffee maker and poured a cup of coffee, “She is, this break is what she needed. She drives herself so hard.”

“I know she does,” Enid said as she put the breakfast casserole in the oven and took a seat at the table. “When you told us you were going to marry a Princess your dad and I didn’t know what to expect. But Cyndi is not your average Princess.”

“That mom is true, and there is nothing average about my wife,”Paul commented “She had reservations about taking this command. She was content teaching and it took a lot of convincing to get her to take it.”

“How long after she took the command did the promotion to commodore come?”Enid asked

“That mom was a sneak tact, Cyndi was on Earth and got orders to report to the Amandora, she thought she was going to be a first officer or at very least the chief science officer. Hank Snow had other ideas and when she got to Mars that is when she was told the ship was hers and then another surprise was the promotion to commodore. Hank felt she was being wasted in the classroom and wanted her out in space.”

“Damned sneaky too, I was drafted,” Cyndi retorted walking into the kitchen, giving her husband a kiss before going for a cup of coffee. Taking the cup she took a seat next to Paul “You know I’m going to have to diet when I get back on the ship. You’re a good cook and in the week I’ve been here I bet I’ve put on twenty pounds. What smells so good?”

“Apple Raisin French Toast,” Enid said “I know it’s one of your favorites. We’re going to hate to see you two leave. It’s been wonderful catching up and spending time with the two of you. I just wish Brent could have been along.”

“You know you’re welcome anytime on Klavor to see him, my parents would love to see you,” Cyndi said as Edward walked in and gave Cyndi an affectionate peck on her cheek. “Good morning.”

“We’ve enjoyed spending time with you, seems we don’t have enough of it,” Edward said “Did I hear right that we can visit Brent?”

Cyndi nodded taking a sip of her coffee “Yes, and if you like I know it’s okay if you want to take him for a while. My folks won’t care.”

“Thank you Cyndi, I’ll contact your parents and arrange some time with him,” Edna said “Cyndi will you help set the table, I thought we’d eat outside on the deck.”

“That sounds good, it’s a nice morning,” Cyndi replied getting up, picking up four plates, silverware and a table cloth and followed her mother in law out to the deck. Together they put the table cloth on the picnic table and set the plates and silverware. Edna placed juice glasses at each place while Edward and Paul put butter, warm syrup and poured orange juice. Paul place four coffee cups and a small picture of cream on the table. “I’ll get breakfast, Paul will you pour the coffee?”

Cyndi walked back into the cabin and returned a few minutes later with the Apple Raisin French Toast and placed it on the table. Edna served generous amounts of the casserole. Everyone chatted and ate.

The sun had come up and had turned the snow covered peaks of the mountains to gold butterflies and hummingbirds darted from flower to flower drinking the nectar. Birds took turns taking a bath in the birdbath.

“I could get used to this, spending time with my son and daughter in law enjoying peace and quiet,” Edward said as he finished breakfast.

“When do you two have to leave?” Edna asked

“Soon mom,” Paul said

“As much as I hate to go I have a ship who needs me,” Cyndi commented “The repairs should nearly be completed.”

Later after a hike, the cabin cleaned and, laundry done and put away, Edna and Edward had their shuttle ready while Paul had checked the yacht. Goodbyes were said with promises of seeing each other soon. The yacht and the shuttle took off together and then both crafts went in different directions. Cyndi took the co-pilots seat and leaned back letting Paul do the flying.

“Did you have a good time?”Paul asked

“I did, I adore your parents,” Cyndi replied “I could get used to that kind of life.”

“Sure you could,” Paul said looking at her “Space is in your blood, you’re not one to sit still.”

Cyndi nodded “Your right, but that break was needed, thank you.”

Three hours later the star base came into view and Paul maneuvered the yacht under the saucer section and let the tractor beam take over as the yacht was brought back to the saucer section, the docking clamps engaged and the door in the saucer closed securing the yacht safely on the ship. Picking up their duffels they exited the yacht and closed the access to it and headed for their quarters. Once there Cyndi logged back in and let Commander O’Connell she was back.
