Mission:
Healing Touch-3
Location: Hut On Planet Surface
Timeline: Current
ON:
Willow had shown the away team to a large hut. Inside were blankets separating rooms, Each room had hammocks for sleeping, furs covered the hammocks. The hammocks were four to a room and were suspended by sinew and were attached to heavy poles in each sleeping area. In the main room was a large fire pit, plenty of wood to heat the hut by and there was an opening in the roof to allow the smoke to escape. Large mats were on the floor for sitting and there were things to cook with. Various bowls, plates and eating forks, knives and spoons were stacked neatly in a large wooden box along with flint to start fires with.
Once everyone was in the hut Cyndi turned to her officers "What are your thoughts on these people? We've all interacted with them. I think we should set up something so our conversations cannot be heard by anyone outside of this hut."
" Perhaps a sentry outside the door?" Sabbath replied.
Hearing the conversation Tabitha interjected "We need to be careful that we are not perceived to be hiding anything; so far these people have received us with open arms and I would hate to see that change if we are to continue our information gathering."
" Observing their interaction with some of the children these people do possess a typical family base. And Corporal punishment is an acceptable norm." Sabbath added.
"That reminds me of an ancient Earth saying, if memory serves from my Academy days, and it went something like this; 'spare the rod and spoil the child'" Tabitha replied "That was a form of Corporal punishment but if it was done with love the child was all the better for it."
" It is also a Vulcan parental approach. The ones I mention are deaf and appear to be ostracized from the community for having this disability Commodore. They may fear disabled people." Sabbath added.
"I have a kid brother and he used to love getting me and Tara in trouble for things he did and we'd be blamed for it," Kristian said
"He finally grew out of it but Kristian and I both had sore backsides until he finally confessed. Of course he did have some threats from me to help him along," Tara said.
"I'm glad I'm an only child," Cyndi commented "Not that I didn't get into my share of trouble. Lieutenant Sabbath what did you observe with the deaf children?Doctor you spoke at length with two women, what did you learn? As far as sentries I agree with the counselor these people trust us and don't feel threatened by us. We can easily erect a damping field while we;re discussing things that the people don't need to know. Lieutenant O'Neil what have you observed and heard?
" Commodore my scrutinies will be in my official report as it is still yielding information." Sabbath replied as he had observed a sub culture of deaf children being cared for by three adults.
"Commodore from what I've observed the people seem to be quite caring towards one another and work together towards a common goal; the way they worked together preparing dinner is a prime example" Tabitha replied then continued "They also seem to handle loss of a loved one much the same as more advanced cultures do."
"They do work as a team, everyone helps," Cyndi agreed "I've not seen any form of hierarchy either. Usually there is someone in charge, Zora and her husband were the first to greet us but that was about it."
"Commodore Zora did tell me that some of the babies are born with spots and some didn't make it. I did see one of the women who is pregnant and hopefully we'll still be here when she gives birth so I can see the baby and determine what the spots may be," Kristian spoke up.
Sabbath raised an eyebrow at the mention of the spots on the children. Perhaps another trait of early discrimination.
"Doctor Long perhaps it's a childhood disease that comes and goes not unlike the measles of ancient Earth" then Tabitha paused "Hopefully you will be able to see these spots first hand and maybe come up with a cure that they could make themselves" she commented with some concern for these children.
"That's my hope too, what ever the spots are they do cause some infants to die. The other issue is the prime directive." Kristian commented. "I can't do anything that show we're advanced and not as primitive as these people are. But I would like to try to cure them and make sure it does not happen again."
Sabbath listened to their conversations as he also struggled with wanting to help the ones that couldn't hear.
"Point well taken Doctor; we can't break the Prime Directive" Tabitha replied then thought for a moment "Now I'm certainly not a Doctor but perhaps some of the local greenery or herbs could be used to treat the infants."
Kristian nodded "That's highly possible. I did my residency on Denobula and I learned a lot in using plants, herbs and other things. I'll know more once I see things,"
"Think you can help doctor?" Cyndi asked
"I hope so commodore," Kristian replied
" If Sciences can be of service just ask Doctor." Sabbath added.
"I'll let you know lieutenant, a lot will depend on what they're dealing with. I want to know what the spots are on the babies and I'd like to take a better look at these people," Kristian said.
"Doctor I would like to accompany you when you check these folks to try and get a read on their mental state of mind" Tabitha commented.
Sabbath looked over to Tara. " I would like to get your assessment of these people Lieutenant. "
"Counselor I'd like that," Kristian said. "I'd welcome you opinion as well."
Tara nodded "They are primitive and lead what appears to be a simple life,"
"We've all had a long day, let's get some rest and we can look into things in better detail in the morning," Cyndi commented.
