Once the away team materialized on the planet surface, Cyndi checked the location of the village that science had reported. "Sciences weren't kidding when they said the climate resembled a tropical rain forest. The village is two miles east. We should make it in about an hour. Large creatures were also reported so keep your eyes open," Cyndi said as they started toward the village.
"It is a bit warm, but long sleeves will help keep bugs out, and protect us form the sun's uv rays." Benjamin said, trying to thank of the positive side of the mission.
“Understood Commander.” Emma thought it was a little more than warm but it reminded her of a vacation they had taken. She smiled to herself as they started to walk.
Sabbath felt the suns rays and immediately felt at home here as it reminded him of the Amazon. He immediately sought out Tara Herculoid. " I packed insect repellent for all of us if anyone wants some."
Emma was curious as to why Sabbath didn’t speak directly to the captain or commander but maybe he was following chain of command. “Keep your eyes out for trouble.” She ordered her team.
"That's get advice Emma." Benjamin said as I will continue to walk slowly because the heat was pounding on them and they didn't want to look too suspicious.
"I'd forgotten how warm a rain forest was," Tara commented.
Cyndi had heard Sabbath's comment about the insect repellent and hoped he remembered this was a primitive society and probably had never seen any form of repellent. They more than likely had their own way of keeping insects away. "Perhaps they have their own way of keeping bugs and insects away. We'll know once we get to the village.
" No doubt you are correct Commodore. It is however in the science gear satchel if you desire to use it. " Sabbath chimed . Living in the Amazon Jungle had taught him to prepare for the worse when it comes to mosquitos.
Tabitha walked along not really minding the heat; it reminded her of a vacation she had taken years ago but what she was really looking forward to was seeing and maybe meeting some of the locals.
Kristian and Tara ran scans of some of the fauna all the while keeping an eye and and ear out for not only the locals but any animals and insects that were likely in the area. So far nothing had been seen or heard.
Total silence filled Sabbath's ears which tingled his intuition that they were probably being watched and observed.
"Are your scans revealing anything?" Benjamin asked as they continue to walking, he wishes making small talk. You another to the primitive world he knows what kind of mysteries or discoveries these local vegetation can make in the Federation.
Tara checked the scans and closed her tri-coder and slipped it into the satchel she carried "The village is about five hundred yards ahead, just past the tree line. I'm picking up what seems to be a camp fire so they do have fire."
Sabbath recalled a traditional native American story. In the traditional story, the animals are cold until the Thunder Boys send lightning to ignite a hollow sycamore tree on an island. Various animals try to retrieve the fire but fail, until the small Water Spider volunteers, successfully weaving a bowl to carry a coal back to the others. This myth had always fascinated Sabbaths curiosity.
“A fire.” Emma repeated her words. “They must be cooking dinner then because it’s not to stay warm.”
Sabbath looked to Tara and then to the others for their reaction . A slight smell of sulfur also filled the air. Curious that such a smell would be around fire on a primitive planet.
"Being a primitive race it stands to reason fire would most likely the only way of cooking their food; be it rain or sunshine" Tabitha interjected.
"Defiantly not to stay warm," Cyndi agreed "It's already warm. They're cooking something and it smells good. We're not that far from the village. Are we ready to meet the people who live here?"
Sabbath was ready but very cautious as where there is smoke their had to be fire.
Thinking for a brief moment "If I may suggest Commodore, we should use a bit of caution how our group of people coming out of the woods, approaches the inhabitants. We don't want our first contact to have any negative results" Tabitha strongly suggested with respect to her C.O.
Cyndi nodded "Good point counselor, question is how do we emerge? We have a good sized landing party. I'm open to suggestions."
Tara had walked to the edge of the woods where she could see the inhabitants without being seen. After a few scans she walked back to the away team and hid her tri-coder "They are cooking some form a meat."
Sabbath sniffed and clearly could smell the cooked protein flavor in the air. Fascinated that they cooked their food given their chronological progress.
"I would suggest not consuming any foreign protein supplements. We have no idea how it will effect our immune systems." Benjamin called out softly, making sure his recommendation was heard by the team.
"We also can't offend them either," Cyndi commented.
"The commander is right," Kristian said "I can give us something to lessen any affects of the food."
" Commander Parker I have scanned this area and am reading a large concentration of what appears to be gold in that direction. That may be something of interest to these people.and worth exploring?" Sabbath addressed Benjamin.
Emma listened as they spoke. She was busy keeping an eye on their surroundings. One never knew who could be hiding out there. She didn’t want them to have any surprises.
Cyndi turned to the away team, we'll walk out together, scans did reveal an area about fifty miles from this settlement. I don't know what language they speak but our com-badges will translate for us. Lieutenant Sabbath I also received a message about the gold. But this is not a Federation planet so therefore we cannot mine anything. Let's go meet them,"
